King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,THE KEY
In Hebrew, the word for “wilderness” (midbar) echoes the consonants of “speech” (d-b-r): the voice meets Moses in the open place.
THE MEANING
You are not outside the reach of divine speech when the landscape feels open, uncertain, or unformed. The LORD’s word meets you there and gives shape to what comes next.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that direction comes only after the wilderness is over: here, the word arrives within it.
THE ROOT
וַיְדַבֵּר
vayedabber
GROWS FROM
דבר
To speak; the related noun davar means a word, matter, or thing.
English separates “spake” from “wilderness,” but the Hebrew places vayedabber in the midbar, whose consonants echo dabar. Whether midbar derives from the same root is uncertain; the sound-link is present in the verse.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word, matter, or thing
דָּבָר
The spoken word is also a matter that takes shape; the voice here begins the instruction that follows.
midbar: Wilderness
מִדְבָּר
Its consonants ד־ב־ר echo dabar, “word”; the pairing holds speech and wilderness together, though their historical etymological link is uncertain.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
To draw out.
Moses’ name carries the movement of being drawn out. The verse places this drawn-out figure in the wilderness as speech begins, letting the name’s motion sit beside the open landscape.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: Draw out
מָשָׁה
This is the verb associated with Moses’ name and gives the name its action.
meshithihu: I drew him out
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
The form in Exodus 2:10 makes the name’s meaning concrete: “because I drew him out of the water.”
THE PATTERN
The wilderness is where a voice sounds and a way is revealed.
The voice of the LORD makes the wilderness writhe; the LORD makes the wilderness of Kadesh writhe.A voice calls out in the wilderness, Clear the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a raised road for our God.The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make ready the way of the LORD, make his paths straight."THE THREAD
And he bent you low, and made you hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had never perceived, nor had your fathers, so that he might make you perceive that humankind does not live by bread alone, but by every word that goes out from the mouth of the LORD does humankind live.Numbers uses the verb vayedabber, “spoke”; Deuteronomy uses davar, “word,” from the same root. The root joins the voice heard in the wilderness to the word that sustains life there.
