This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the LORD) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.

The repeated “instead of” makes this a positional exchange: the Levites take the firstborn’s place, carrying forward the claim rather than erasing it.

The LORD’s claim remains as its representatives change: the Levites stand in place of Israel’s firstborn, and their cattle in place of Israel’s firstlings. What is first is still assigned to the LORD; a people and herd now occupy that place.

תַּחַת

tachat

GROWS FROM

תחת

t-ḥ-t

Under, beneath; in the place of, instead of.

“in place of” in this verse is tachat. The repeated word translated “instead of” also means “under” or “beneath.” The Levites are set in the firstborn’s place, so the language presents replacement as a positional exchange that carries the claim forward.

ALSO GROWS

taḥton: Lower; beneath.

תַּחְתּוֹן

This branch preserves the sense of one thing occupying a lower or underlying position.

taḥtit: Bottom; lowest part.

תַּחְתִּית

This branch shows the root’s spatial sense of what lies beneath, alongside its sense of standing in another’s place.

בְּכוֹר

bekhor

GROWS FROM

בכר

b-k-r

To be first; to be firstborn.

The same root names the firstborn, firstfruits, and the birthright. Here the Levites and their cattle take the place of what is first and claimed, while that claim remains in view.

ALSO GROWS

bikkurim: Firstfruits; earliest produce.

בִּכּוּרִים

The branch links the firstborn to the first yield, showing that both the first opening and the first harvest carry the idea of what comes first.

bekhorah: Birthright; firstborn status.

בְּכוֹרָה

This branch names the status associated with being first, making the exchange a transfer of place as well as of people and animals.

The first opening belongs to the LORD, and a designated people can stand in its place.

Set apart to me every firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, of humankind and of beast; it is mine.
Exodus 13:2 · SDVThe firstborn are claimed as the LORD’s, establishing the claim that the Levites later represent.
For they are given, given to me from among the children of Israel. Instead of all who open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me.
Numbers 8:16 · SDVThe Levites are explicitly given in place of the firstborn, carrying the same exchange further.
As it is written in the instruction of the LORD, Every male that opens the womb will be called set apart to the LORD.
Luke 2:23 · SDVThe first opening still carries the mark of belonging to the LORD.
For they are given, given to me from among the children of Israel. Instead of all who open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me.
Numbers 8:16 · SDV

Numbers 8:16 repeats the same Hebrew word for “instead of,” making the positional exchange explicit. It shows the Levites as wholly given in the firstborn’s place, so the claim is carried forward through representation.
