King James wording
King James Version
And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are more than the Levites;THE KEY
What exceeds the substitute is not erased; it is named for release.
THE MEANING
The Levites represent the firstborn only up to their number, leaving 273 still visibly counted. The verse names them as those to be redeemed: what the substitute cannot cover remains present and has a path to release.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being beyond a substitute’s count makes someone disposable; the surplus is still recognized and has a path to release.
THE ROOT
פְּדוּיֵי
peduyei
GROWS FROM
פדה
To redeem or ransom; to secure release through an exchange.
“ransomed” in this verse is peduyei. פְּדוּיֵי (peduyei, those redeemed) carries the root פדה (padah, to redeem or ransom), which holds release through an exchange. The 273 remain visible beyond the Levite count, named as people for whom release is provided.
ALSO GROWS
padah: He redeemed or ransomed.
פָּדָה
This verb form carries the same three root consonants, פדה, and makes the act of release explicit.
yifdeh: He will redeem or ransom.
יִפְדֶּה
This form keeps the same root consonants, פדה, showing the release as an action still to come.
THE PATTERN
Redemption answers a claim with release, preserving what would otherwise be lost from the whole.
And every firstborn of a donkey you shall buy back with a lamb; and if you will not buy it back, then you shall break its neck. And every firstborn of humankind among your children you shall buy back. And if it is of an unclean beast, then he buys it back according to your arranged worth, and adds a fifth part of it to that; but if it is not bought back, then it is sold according to your arranged worth. To buy out those under the instruction, so that we might receive the placing as sons.THE THREAD
And every firstborn of a donkey you shall buy back with a lamb; and if you will not buy it back, then you shall break its neck. And every firstborn of humankind among your children you shall buy back.Numbers calls the surplus firstborn פְּדוּיֵי (peduyei, those redeemed), from פדה (padah, to redeem or ransom); Exodus uses that same root for redeeming the firstborn. The connection shows the remainder is still recognized while a substitute answers the claim.
