King James wording
King James Version
And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.THE KEY
The Levites are named as “keepers of the keeping” even as people are counted alongside livestock in the division of spoils.
THE MEANING
People are counted alongside livestock as divisible war spoils, and a portion of that allotment goes to the Levites who guard the LORD’s dwelling. Sacred guardianship stands inside the same economy of taking and division.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse unsettles the assumption that sacred service stands outside material power: the Levites’ share comes from an allotment that counts human beings among war spoils.
THE ROOT
שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁמֶרֶת
shomrei mishmeret
GROWS FROM
שמר
To guard, watch, or keep.
“keep the watch” in this verse is shomrei mishmeret. The phrase repeats שמר in “keepers” and “charge”: closely, it says “keepers of the keeping.” The echo makes the Levites’ role sound like ongoing watchfulness, not merely a title.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: Keeper, guardian.
שֹׁמֵר
This form names the Levites by the act of guarding the tabernacle.
mishmeret: Charge, watch, or guard duty.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This noun shares the root with “keepers,” so the phrase binds the Levites’ identity to their continuing charge.
THE PATTERN
An entrusted place or people is named through the act of keeping them.
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.Look, the watcher of Israel neither nods nor sleeps. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your nature. Those you gave me I have kept, and none of them has perished, but the son of perishing, that the writing might be filled full.THE THREAD
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.Genesis uses the same root שמר for the human task of keeping the garden, while Numbers names the Levites as shomrei mishmeret, keepers of the tabernacle’s charge. The shared seed links stewardship of cultivated ground with watch over the sacred dwelling.
