King James wording
King James Version
And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the LORD’s tribute was threescore and twelve.THE KEY
The LORD’s share is exact arithmetic: seventy-two from thirty-six thousand is one animal in five hundred.
THE MEANING
The verse holds a counted whole and a measured claim together: 36,000 cattle, with 72 named as the LORD’s tribute. The portion is precise, one out of every five hundred. The false belief this undoes is that what is held forms a whole with no claim beyond itself.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that possession is an undivided whole, carrying no claim beyond the holder.
THE ROOT
מִכְסָם
mikhsām
GROWS FROM
מ־כ־ס
m-k-s
An assessed levy or tribute.
“tribute” in this verse is mikhsām. The rare word names an assessed levy, so the 72 are calculated from the counted cattle rather than named as an unrelated amount. The one-in-five-hundred ratio makes the structure visible: the portion is measured within the whole.
ALSO GROWS
mekes: Levy, tribute, assessed share.
מֶכֶס
Numbers 31:28 uses this same noun when it states the one-in-five-hundred rule that produces the count in this verse.
mikhsām: Their tribute or assessed levy.
מִכְסָם
The possessive ending ties the levy to the cattle being counted; the portion belongs to the inventory from which it is measured.
THE PATTERN
A portion set apart from abundance becomes visible through a measured count.
And concerning the tenth of the herd or of the flock, even of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth is set apart to the LORD.And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he gave him a tenth of all.On the first day of the week, let each of you lay something by at his own side, storing it up, as his way has gone well for him, so that no gatherings are made when I come.THE THREAD
And lift up a tribute to the LORD from the men of war who went out to battle, one living soul from every five hundred, from the living souls, from the cattle, from the donkeys, and from the sheep. The same rare word for tribute appears with its rule: one out of five hundred is assigned. Here, 72 out of 36,000 is exactly that ratio, so the count shows the rule at work.
