King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,THE KEY
The Hebrew places kindled anger beside a sworn oath, showing the heat taking the form of binding speech.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s anger is kindled, and in that same moment he swears: the heat moves directly into binding speech. The verse shows how a declaration can carry the force of what burns beneath it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the idea that anger stays only an inward feeling: here it becomes the substance of an oath.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשָּׁבַע
wayyiššāvaʿ
GROWS FROM
שבע
shāvaʿ
To swear or take an oath; the same consonantal root also names seven.
The verb translated “sware” belongs to the same Hebrew root as “seven,” and a branch of that root names an oath. The declaration is more than anger spoken aloud: the root gives it the weight of a sealed commitment.
ALSO GROWS
shevuʿah: Oath
שְׁבוּעָה
This noun uses the same root to name the binding declaration that the verb expresses here.
shevaʿ: Seven
שֶׁבַע
The shared consonants link the oath with seven, giving the sworn declaration an echo of completeness and solemn sealing.
THE PATTERN
Speech gives inward force an outward form that carries consequence.
And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,For humankind swears by the greater, and an oath for steadying is for them the boundary of every word set against. And the burning of the LORD's anger flared against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he speaks well. And also, behold, he is going out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.THE THREAD
And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,Deuteronomy repeats the same sequence: anger rises and an oath begins. The shared Hebrew oath-root links the passages through speech that carries force beyond the moment that produces it.
