King James wording
King James Version
For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root says they will not inherit with the others and that their own inheritance has already come to them.
THE MEANING
A portion can be yours even when it lies apart from where others receive theirs. The boundary marks a distinct inheritance; it does not make that inheritance unreal.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
You must stand on the same side as everyone else to possess a real inheritance.
THE ROOT
נִנְחַל
ninḥal
GROWS FROM
נחל
To inherit or receive as a possession or allotted portion.
“inherit / inheritance” in this verse is ninḥal. The verse uses one root first for inheriting together and then for the inheritance already come to them. Its repetition shifts the question from whether they inherit to where their allotted portion lies.
ALSO GROWS
ninḥal: We will inherit or receive as our portion.
נִנְחַל
This is the verb in “we will not inherit with them,” naming the act the speakers decline to share.
naḥălātēnū: Our inheritance, our allotted portion.
נַחֲלָתֵנוּ
The same root names what has come to them east of Jordan, joining the act of inheriting to the portion itself.
THE PATTERN
Inheritance is a portion received and named by the ground or boundary it occupies.
For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance. The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.Flourishing are the bowed, for they inherit the earth.THE THREAD
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful. The word translated “heritage” shares the same Hebrew root as “inherit” and “inheritance” in Numbers 32:19. Psalm’s measuring lines picture a portion with bounds, while Numbers names the portion east of Jordan.
