This verse in the King James

King James wording
So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

Moses places the pledge in shared hands: priest, successor, and tribal heads.

A commitment becomes visible and durable when responsibility passes through more than the person who first speaks it. Here it rests with the priest, the next leader, and the heads of the tribes together. The charge moves from Moses, “drawn out,” toward Joshua, whose name carries the LORD’s deliverance.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A promise is not made secure by the makers’ intention alone; it also needs to be carried in shared responsibility.

וַיְצַו

vaytsav

GROWS FROM

צוה

tsavah

To command or charge.

“commanded” in this verse is vaytsav. The root also gives the word for a commandment: a charge that remains meaningful beyond the moment it is spoken. Here the charge is entrusted to several leaders, making responsibility public and shared.

ALSO GROWS

tsav: Command, charge.

צַו

This concise form brings out the force of the order Moses gives.

mitzvah: Commandment, charge.

מִצְוָה

The charge becomes something that can be carried forward, not just heard once.

מֹשֶׁה

Mosheh

GROWS FROM

משה

mashah

To draw out.

Moses’s name carries the nature of one drawn out. In this verse, the one drawn out passes responsibility onward, so the charge does not end with the person who first carries it.

ALSO GROWS

mashah: To draw out.

מָשָׁה

This is the verb associated with Moses’s name.

meshithihu: I drew him out.

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

This form appears in the naming of Moses and makes the name’s root action explicit.

יְהוֹשֻׁעַ

Yehoshua

GROWS FROM

ישע

yasha

To deliver, to bring out from constriction.

Joshua’s name joins the divine name with the root of deliverance. As the charge passes to him, the name frames succession as carrying deliverance forward.

ALSO GROWS

yeshuah: Deliverance.

יְשׁוּעָה

This noun names the deliverance carried in the root of Joshua’s name.

moshia: Deliverer.

מוֹשִׁיעַ

This form names one who delivers, echoing the nature carried by Joshua’s name.

A charge becomes durable when it is made visible and entrusted to people who can carry it onward.

And let them judge the people at all times; and it shall be that every great word they bring to you, but every small word they shall judge, so it will lighten from upon you, and they shall carry the burden with you.
Exodus 18:22 · SDVResponsibility is distributed among leaders who share the burden and keep the work moving.
And when they had appointed elders for them in every assembly, and had prayed with fasting, they set them beside the Lord, upon whom they had trusted.
Acts 14:23 · SDVCommunities receive appointed leaders as responsibility is entrusted beyond the people who first establish them.
And these things you heard from me among many witnesses, place beside steady people who will be able to teach others also.
2 Timothy 2:2 · SDVA charge continues through people who can pass it on to others.
And stand him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the assembly, and give him a charge before their eyes.
Numbers 27:19 · SDV

The word translated “charge” here and “commanded” in Numbers 32:28 comes from ⁨צוה⁩ (tsavah). Both verses place responsibility before the priest and the community, so the transfer is witnessed and entrusted.
