King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,THE KEY
Here, speech is not empty sound: the word spoken to the one drawn out is about to become the shape of what he receives.
THE MEANING
You stand at the threshold of a spoken word that becomes the matter now being defined. The one addressed, Moses, bears the name of one drawn out; here he receives speech that will map an inheritance.
THE ROOT
דִּבֶּר
dibber
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
To speak; the related noun can mean word or matter.
“spoke” in this verse is dibber. English can make speaking sound like only an act, while word sounds like the thing produced; Hebrew holds them under the same root, and davar can also mean matter. The LORD’s speech arrives as the matter being set out, not a preface to something separate.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word; matter.
דָּבָר
The spoken word and the matter it addresses share the same root.
dibber: He spoke.
דִּבֶּר
This is the speaking in the verse: the LORD’s word is about to define what follows.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
מ־שׁ־ה
To draw out.
Moses carries the name of the one drawn out, a nature the text itself traces to mashah in Exodus 2:10. Here the drawn-out one is addressed by speech that defines a place.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: To draw out.
מָשָׁה
Exodus 2:10 uses this root in the explanation of Moses’ name.
Mosheh: Moses; the one drawn out.
מֹשֶׁה
The name identifies the one receiving the LORD’s speech in this verse.
THE PATTERN
A divine word turns what is spoken into a defined reality.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands.By trust we perceive that the ages were fitted together by the word of God, so that what is seen did not come out of what appears.THE THREAD
And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, the one drawn out, and she said, Because from the waters I drew him out.Exodus explains Moses’ name through mashah, “to draw out.” Numbers now presents the one drawn out as the recipient of speech that will set boundaries for an inheritance.
