This verse in the King James

King James wording
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

The return cannot be purchased: the covering payment is refused, and the boundary lasts until the priest’s death.

You cannot purchase a return to the land while the priest lives. The payment named here would cover the case of the one who fled, yet it is refused; return waits until the priest’s death. Blood guilt is not treated as a debt that money can simply settle.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that payment can cover bloodshed and buy back the right to return.

כֹּפֶר

kōpher

GROWS FROM

כפר

k-p-r

To cover or cover over.

The KJV’s “satisfaction” names a payment that would cover the case; the Hebrew ⁨כֹּפֶר⁩ (kōpher, covering payment or ransom) shares its root with words for covering. Here that covering payment is barred, so the return is tied to the priest’s death, not a price.

ALSO GROWS

kaphar: To cover or coat over.

כָּפַר

This verb shows the concrete sense beneath the payment: something placed over a surface, like a covering. The verse refuses that kind of cover as a way to restore the fugitive’s return.

kappōret: The cover of the ark, often rendered “mercy seat.”

כַּפֹּרֶת

The shared root links a physical covering with the payment called “satisfaction.” In this verse, though, no covering payment can remove the boundary before the priest dies.

Where blood guilt is at stake, release is not bought with money; the text binds it to death.

So you shall not defile the land where you are, for blood defiles the land; and the land cannot be covered over for the blood poured out in it, except by the blood of the one who poured it out.
Numbers 35:33 · SDVThe next verse states why a payment cannot settle the matter: the bloodshed itself binds the land until blood answers for it.
No man can buy back his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.
Psalm 49:7 · SDVThe same root for covering and ransom appears in the claim that no one can pay to redeem another’s life.
And nearly all things are cleansed in blood according to the instruction, and without the pouring out of blood, no release comes.
Hebrews 9:22 · SDVThis verse also ties release to blood being shed, rather than to a payment that bypasses death.
No man can buy back his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.
Psalm 49:7 · SDV

Numbers calls the refused payment a ⁨כֹּפֶר⁩ (kōpher, covering payment); Psalm uses the same ⁨כפר⁩ (k-p-r, cover) root for ransom. Together they show the limit of the covering: a price cannot buy another life back.
