And the hangings of the court, and the screen for the gate of the court, which is by the dwelling and by the altar all around, and their cords, and all the vessels of their serving, and all that is made for them. So they shall serve.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.

The boundary, doorway, cords, and tools around the altar are themselves counted as service.

The work that keeps the court bounded and its entrance in place belongs to the service of the tabernacle. What seems peripheral, the cords, hangings, and tools, is part of the structure that makes the space usable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that service begins only at the altar is undone: the court, its entrance, and its supports belong to it too.

עֲבֹדָה

avodah

GROWS FROM

עבד

to work, serve, or perform labor

“So they shall serve” in this verse is avodah. The verse uses this word for “their service,” then repeats the same root in “they shall serve.” Hebrew places the assigned cords, hangings, and tools inside the work itself; they are not separate from the service they support.

ALSO GROWS

avad: to work, serve

עָבַד

The verse’s final “they shall serve” comes from this root, joining the workers’ task to the objects assigned to it.

eved: servant, worker

עֶבֶד

The same root names the person who performs the work, linking service to the people who carry it.

What sustains a sacred whole belongs to its service, even when it stands at the edge or seems less visible.

And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDVThe garden is sustained through work and keeping, making its ongoing care part of the human charge.
These are the accountings of the dwelling, the dwelling of the witness, as they were counted according to the mouth of Moses, for the serving of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest.
Exodus 38:21 · SDVThe tabernacle’s material work is counted as service, just as this verse counts its hangings, cords, and tools.
But much more those limbs of the body that seem to be weaker are needed.
1 Corinthians 12:22 · SDVThe parts that seem less prominent are necessary to the whole, like the supports and fittings included in the court’s service.
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDV

In Genesis, “dress” translates the same Hebrew root, ⁨עבד⁩ (avad: to work, serve), that appears in this verse’s “service” and “serve.” The garden’s tending and the court’s upkeep share one root: practical work belongs to the care of a sacred place.
