This verse in the King James

King James wording
This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

The word ⁨עֲבֹדָה⁩ (avodah, “work/service”) names forced labor in Egypt and the Merarites’ work in the tabernacle; here, the hand directing the work changes its character.

The shared dwelling is sustained by work assigned to particular families and held under accountable oversight. The word “service” can describe labor under compulsion or labor within the tabernacle, so work is not defined by effort alone; its setting and governing hand matter now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This loosens the belief that every form of service is bondage simply because it costs labor: the same word can name both imposed work and work ordered toward a shared dwelling.

עֲבֹדַת

ʿavodat

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

Serve, work, labor.

English “service” can sound like a settled spiritual category, but this root names the concrete act of working or serving. The noun ⁨עֲבֹדָה⁩ (avodah, “work/service”) covers both imposed labor and tabernacle work; the phrase “under the hand of Ithamar” places this work under a named steward.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāvad: To serve or work.

עָבַד

This verb comes from the same root and appears in Exodus 1:14, where the Egyptians make Israel serve.

ʿeved: A servant or bondservant.

עֶבֶד

This noun shows that the root can name the person in a relationship of service as well as the work itself.

avodah: Work, labor, or service.

עֲבֹדָה

This is the noun used for the Merarites’ work and for Egypt’s forced labor, joining the passages through a shared word without making their circumstances alike.

A shared dwelling or body is sustained by distinct work entrusted to particular people.

Then Bezaleel and Aholiab made, and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD set wisdom and discernment, to know how to make all manner of work for the serving of the set-apart place, according to all that the LORD had commanded.
Exodus 36:1 · SDVSkilled people carry out distinct work for the sanctuary, making the shared dwelling possible.
But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · SDVThe body is made whole through members given particular places within it.
And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in clay and in brick, and in all the labor of the field; every service they made them serve was with crushing.
Exodus 1:14 · SDV

The word ⁨עֲבֹדָה⁩ (avodah, “work/service”) appears in both passages, with the verb ⁨עָבַד⁩ (ʿāvad, “serve/work”) in Exodus. The shared root does not erase the difference: there, labor is imposed with rigor; here, it is assigned within the tabernacle under Ithamar’s oversight.
