This verse in the King James

King James wording
This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:

The “most holy things” are not merely more sacred objects; their concentrated set-apartness shapes the service around them.

Sacredness is more than a title: it gathers a particular kind of service around itself. What is held as most set apart has a distinct relation to those who serve near it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that sacredness is only a label with no bearing on how something is approached.

קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים

qodesh haqodashim

GROWS FROM

קדש

q-d-sh

Set apart; made distinct for sacred use.

“most set-apart things” in this verse is qodesh haqodashim. The Hebrew phrase is literally “holy of holies,” repeating the same root in “holy” and “holy things.” English gives a degree of holiness; Hebrew’s repetition makes the set-apartness itself feel concentrated.

ALSO GROWS

qadosh: Set apart, sacred.

קָדוֹשׁ

The same root describes the quality that marks these things as distinct.

miqdash: Sanctuary, a set-apart place.

מִקְדָּשׁ

The sanctuary and its sacred objects share the root of being set apart.

עֲבֹדָה

ʿavodah

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

Serve, work.

“serving” in this verse is ʿavodah. The word for service belongs to the same root as “serve” and “servant.” The verse presents this work as a relationship to what is set apart, not just a task detached from it.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāvad: Serve, work.

עָבַד

This verb is the root action carried in “service.”

ʿeved: Servant.

עֶבֶד

The same root links the service to the person who serves.

What is set apart is approached through ordered, assigned service.

At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to lift the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD and minister to him, and to bless in his nature, to this day.
Deuteronomy 10:8 · SDVThe set-apart tribe receives distinct work around the ark and the presence of the LORD.
But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, for the service of the set-apart things belonging to them was that they should lift upon their shoulders.
Numbers 7:9 · SDVThe sanctuary’s service is assigned to the Kohathites and takes the concrete form of bearing its sacred things.
Now with these things so built, the priests always go into the first tent, completing the services.
Hebrews 9:6 · SDVThe ordered sanctuary has an appointed service carried out by those who enter it.
But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, for the service of the set-apart things belonging to them was that they should lift upon their shoulders.
Numbers 7:9 · SDV

The word translated “service” comes from the same Hebrew root ⁨עבד⁩ (ʿ-b-d, serve, work) as in this verse. Here the service named in Numbers 4:4 becomes concrete: the Kohathites bear the sanctuary’s sacred things on their shoulders.
