King James wording
King James Version
One kid of the goats for a sin offering:THE KEY
What English packages as “sin offering” is, in Hebrew, an offering for the missing, naming the breach rather than hiding it.
THE MEANING
This verse places one young goat beside what is missing: the breach is named, and an offering is brought in relation to it. The Hebrew חַטָּאת (chatta’t, missing or offering for the missing) holds the condition and its offering in one word. What is missing receives a concrete response rather than remaining an abstraction.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that failure must stay unnamed or be met only with condemnation: here, the missing is brought into view alongside an offering.
THE ROOT
חַטָּאת
chatta't
GROWS FROM
חטא
chata
to miss; a missing
“as an offering for falling short” in this verse is chatta't. The Hebrew חַטָּאת (chatta’t) names both the missing and the offering made in relation to it; English separates these into “sin” and “sin offering.” The offering does not hide the missing: it gives it a concrete, named response.
ALSO GROWS
chata: to miss; to do wrong
חָטָא
The verb shares the root, linking the offering to the act or condition of missing.
ḥōṭēʾ: one who misses; a wrongdoer
חוֹטֵא
This form names the one associated with the missing, keeping the person and the condition connected.
chatta't: a missing; an offering for the missing
חַטָּאת
This is the word in the verse, holding the named condition and its offering together.
THE PATTERN
The missing is named plainly and met with a concrete offering.
If the anointed priest misses the mark so as to bring guilt upon the people, then let him bring near, for his falling short in which he has missed the mark, a young bull without blemish to the LORD as an offering for falling short. But if his hand does not reach two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he who misses the mark brings as his drawing near the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour as an offering for falling short; he sets no oil upon it, neither does he set any white resin upon it, for it is an offering for it.But this one, after bringing near one slain offering for shortcomings, sat down without break at the right hand of God.THE THREAD
If the anointed priest misses the mark so as to bring guilt upon the people, then let him bring near, for his falling short in which he has missed the mark, a young bull without blemish to the LORD as an offering for falling short. The Hebrew root חטא (chata, to miss) appears in the language for both the sin and the sin offering here. The shared root lets the offering read as a response to a named missing, rather than a separate religious category.
