This verse in the King James

King James wording
So it was alway: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.

Continuity here does not mean one unchanging appearance: the dwelling is covered by cloud in the day and made visible by fire at night.

The presence over the dwelling remains steady as the hours change. In daylight, cloud covers it; at night, fire is what appears. A change in what is visible does not by itself mean the sustaining presence is gone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A presence is absent whenever it stops appearing in the same form.

יְכַסֶּנּוּ

yĕkhassennû

GROWS FROM

כסה

To cover, to spread over.

The cloud covers the dwelling without making it cease to be there. The same root appears in Psalm 32:1, where a person’s missing is described as covered, carrying this image from a dwelling’s exterior to what is exposed within.

ALSO GROWS

kissāh: He covered; covered over.

כִּסָּה

This verb form from the same root makes the act of covering explicit, as the cloud does here.

mĕkhassēh: Covering; one that covers.

מְכַסֶּה

This form names what performs the covering, bringing the cloud’s role into focus.

מַרְאֵה

marʾēh

GROWS FROM

ראה

To see, look, or appear.

“sight” in this verse is marʾēh. The night is described as a ⁨מַרְאֵה⁩, an appearance: the noun carries the root of seeing within the sign itself. The verse marks a change in visibility, with cloud as the daytime covering and fire as what is seen at night.

ALSO GROWS

rāʾāh: To see or perceive.

רָאָה

The root names the act of seeing that makes the night sign perceptible.

rōʾeh: One who sees; a seer.

רֹאֶה

This form links the appearance to the one who perceives it.

nirʾāh: Appears; is seen.

נִרְאָה

This form emphasizes that the sign becomes visible, matching the verse’s focus on its night appearance.

One steady presence remains through forms fitted to day and night.

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night.
Exodus 13:21 · SDVThe same cloud-and-fire signs shape the way through both day and night.

Psalm 105:39 · SDVCloud provides covering and fire gives night-light, holding concealment and visibility together.
Again then Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; whoever follows me shall never walk in the dark, but shall hold the light of life.
John 8:12 · SDVLight gives a way through darkness when darkness changes what can be seen.
A Psalm of David, Maschil. Flourishing is the one whose rebellion is released, whose shortcomings are covered.
Psalm 32:1 · SDV

Psalm 32:1 uses another form of the Hebrew root ⁨כָּסָה⁩ (kāsāh), translated “covered” here. The same root reaches from the cloud over a dwelling to a person’s missing being covered, joining the visible shelter with what is exposed within.
