King James wording
King James Version
So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;THE KEY
The bonds themselves become visible: what confines you in Christ cannot keep your life hidden.
THE MEANING
When your life is bound in Christ, that condition is not invisible. Even within a place of power, your bonds become known, and their visibility reaches beyond it. The verse holds confinement in plain view while naming where it is carried: in Christ.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that confinement makes your life or your allegiance invisible.
THE ROOT
δεσμούς
desmous
GROWS FROM
δεσμ- (desm-), from δέω (deō)
to bind
“bonds” in this verse is desmous. The same word family names the bond, the act of binding, and the person held by it. The verse makes the bound condition itself visible; it does not turn the chain into a mere metaphor.
ALSO GROWS
desmos: bond, chain, fetter
δεσμός
The singular form names the binding that the verse says becomes publicly visible.
deō: to bind
δέω
The verb reveals the action held inside “bonds”: something is fastened or held.
desmios: prisoner, a bound person
δέσμιος
The same word family can name the person as well as the restraint, joining the visible bonds to the life they confine.
φανερούς
phanerous
GROWS FROM
φαίνω
phainō
to appear, come into view
“Manifest” carries the sense of becoming visible or clear. Here, it is the bonds that come into view, so the fact of confinement cannot remain concealed.
ALSO GROWS
phaneroō: make visible, reveal
φανερόω
This verb from the same word family gives the force of the bonds becoming known.
phainō: appear, come into view
φαίνω
The root shows that manifestation is an appearance: what was unseen becomes visible.
epiphainō: appear, shine upon
ἐπιφαίνω
This related form carries appearing into view, echoing how the bonds become visible beyond their immediate setting.
THE PATTERN
Confinement can make a condition visible, while what is sent to bring release can reach beyond it.
In this I bear ill, even unto bonds, as one who works ill; but the word of God is not bound. And suddenly there came a great shaking, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and at once all the doors were opened, and every one's bonds were untied. The breath of the Lord LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the bowed ones; he has sent me to bind up the broken of heart, to proclaim flowing freedom to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are chained.THE THREAD
And suddenly there came a great shaking, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and at once all the doors were opened, and every one's bonds were untied.“Bands” here is δεσμοί (desmoi), from the same word family as the “bonds” in Philippians. One verse shows those bonds becoming visible; the other shows them loosed, opening the word’s picture of confinement without making it the final condition.
