King James wording
King James Version
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.THE KEY
The trap is already exposed to its target, while its setter fails to see where the scheme leads.
THE MEANING
A harmful plan does not become powerful just because its maker has arranged it; when its target sees the net, the trap cannot take hold. The deeper blindness belongs to the one who imagines the scheme ends with someone else, while its consequences are already in motion.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that careful plotting gives someone control over the consequences.
THE ROOT
מְזֹרָה

GROWS FROM
זרה
z-r-h
Scatter, disperse, or winnow.
The word translated “spread” comes from the root זרה, which carries the sense of scattering and winnowing. The net is scattered into the bird’s field of sight, making its exposure part of why it fails.
ALSO GROWS
scatter: To scatter or disperse.
זָרָה
The net is spread across the bird’s path, not hidden from its view.
winnowing fork: A tool for tossing grain so the wind separates it from chaff.
מִזְרֶה
This branch keeps the sense of spreading material out; here the spread net becomes visible enough for the bird to avoid.
THE PATTERN
A scheme that lays harm on another already carries the measure of its return.
He digs a pit and hollows it out, and falls into the pit he works. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with what measure you measure, it will be measured to you.Do not be led astray. God is not sneered at. For whatever a person sows, that also he reaps.THE THREAD
Let ruin come upon him without knowing it, and let the net he hid seize him; into that very pit of ruin let him fall. Both verses use the Hebrew word רֶשֶׁת (reshet), “net.” Here the bird sees the net and it is futile; in Psalm 35:8 the hidden net catches its own setter.
