King James wording
King James Version
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.THE KEY
Hatred wakes disputes into motion, while love spreads a cover over every rebellion.
THE MEANING
When hatred takes hold, disputes wake into activity between you and others. Love lays a cover over even rebellion and rupture. The verse names two forces at work now: one stirs division awake; the other covers the breach.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that hatred merely follows conflict: the verse says hatred wakes disputes into motion.
THE ROOT
תְּעֹרֵר
teʿorer
GROWS FROM
עור
To wake, rouse, or stir into activity.
The verb comes from a root meaning to wake or rouse: hatred does not simply accompany disputes; it wakes them into activity. The English “stirreth up” carries that image of conflict being roused.
ALSO GROWS
ʿur: Wake; rouse.
עוּר
This verb shares the root and makes the image of disputes awakened by hatred concrete.
meʿorer: One who rouses or awakens.
מְעוֹרֵר
This form names the rousing action that hatred performs in the verse.
תְּכַסֶּה
tekhasseh
GROWS FROM
כסה
To cover or conceal from view.
“covers” in this verse is tekhasseh. Love’s action is pictured as a covering laid over offense. The verse presents this covering as reaching every rebellion, interrupting the way an offense can remain exposed and keep stirring strife.
ALSO GROWS
mikhseh: A cover or covering.
מִכְסֶה
This noun from the same root makes the covering in the verse tangible.
hitkassah: To cover oneself.
הִתְכַּסָּה
This form shows the root can describe something being covered, not only an act that covers another thing.
פְּשָׁעִים
peshaʿim
GROWS FROM
פשע
To rebel, break away, or act in breach.
“rebellions” in this verse is peshaʿim. The word translated “sins” is plural for rebellion or breaking away. Love’s covering therefore reaches breaches and acts of rupture, not only private mistakes.
ALSO GROWS
peshaʿ: Rebellion; a breach.
פֶּשַׁע
This singular form names the kind of rupture covered in the verse.
posheaʿ: One who rebels or breaks away.
פּוֹשֵׁעַ
This form connects the breach to the person acting in rebellion.
THE PATTERN
Love’s covering interrupts the multiplication of conflict that hatred awakens.
He who covers rebellion seeks love, but he who doubles back on a word splits apart the closest friends. And above all, hold love stretched out among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of missed marks.Let him know that the one who turns back one of those who miss the mark from the wandering of his way will deliver a living soul from death, and will cover a multitude of shortcomings.THE THREAD
He who covers rebellion seeks love, but he who doubles back on a word splits apart the closest friends. The same Hebrew root for “covereth” appears in both verses: love covers rebellion here, and covering a transgression seeks love there. The second half sharpens the contrast: repeating the matter separates friends, while covering checks the move from offense to division.
