King James wording
King James Version
The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.THE KEY
The verse gives its bloom to a tent and its collapse to a house, locating flourishing in alignment rather than impressive shelter.
THE MEANING
A dwelling shaped by wickedness comes apart, while the upright’s tent blooms. The verse places flourishing in the life within the dwelling, even when its shelter is only a tent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The appearance of permanence does not prove that a life is secure: the house can be overthrown while the tent blooms.
THE ROOT
יַפְרִיחַ
yaphriakh
GROWS FROM
פרח
p-r-ḥ
To sprout or blossom; to break forth into growth.
“blooms” in this verse is yaphriakh. The Hebrew verb carries the image of breaking into blossom, giving the tent a living force that the English word “flourish” only partly shows. The contrast is striking: the house is destroyed, while the tent sends out growth.
ALSO GROWS
perach: Blossom, flower
פֶּרַח
This noun makes the proverb’s flourishing image concrete: the upright tent is pictured as a place of blossom.
parach: To sprout, bloom, or flourish
פָּרַח
This verb shares the same seed and shows that flourishing is growth breaking into view, not merely a dwelling remaining intact.
יְשָׁרִים
yesharim
GROWS FROM
ישר
y-sh-r
Straight, level, or aligned.
“straight ones” in this verse is yesharim. “Upright” carries a spatial image of straightness and alignment alongside its moral sense. The tent’s bloom is linked to people whose way is straight, joining inner direction with outward flourishing.
ALSO GROWS
yashar: Straight, level, or right
יָשָׁר
This form reveals the image within “upright”: a life directed along a straight way.
meysharim: Straightness, levelness, or equity
מֵישָׁרִים
This related form carries straightness into the idea of an even, just way, illuminating the alignment named by “the upright.”
THE PATTERN
A dwelling’s outward strength cannot secure it; flourishing appears where life is aligned and rooted in what endures.
The aligned one blooms like the palm tree; he grows tall like the cedar in Lebanon. For the LORD perceives the way of the aligned, but the way of the wicked loses its way.And the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds breathed and fell against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.THE THREAD
The aligned one blooms like the palm tree; he grows tall like the cedar in Lebanon.“Flourish” in both verses comes from פרח (p-r-ḥ), the Hebrew root for sprouting and blossoming. Psalm 92:12 unfolds the proverb’s brief image: the upright tent’s bloom becomes a palm and cedar growing into view.
