King James wording
King James Version
The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.THE KEY
Knowledge is never a possession that ends the search: the heart gathers it as the ear keeps pursuing it.
THE MEANING
Your discerning heart gathers knowledge while your wise ear keeps searching for it. Wisdom moves through both at once: inward discernment receives, and listening stays open to what has not yet been perceived.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being wise means having arrived at certainty and no longer needing to listen.
THE ROOT
דַּעַת
daʿat
GROWS FROM
יָדַע
yadaʿ
To know or perceive; in this word, knowledge can carry the sense of knowing through acquaintance, not information alone.
The same noun appears after both verbs: what the heart acquires is exactly what the ear seeks. Its root holds knowledge as something encountered and continually sought, not merely stored.
ALSO GROWS
yadaʿ: To know, perceive, or recognize.
יָדַע
This verb is the seed of daʿat, tying the verse’s knowledge to active perception.
maddaʿ: Knowledge or science.
מַדָּע
This related noun shows the same root extending into knowledge that can be gathered and developed.
נָבוֹן
navon
GROWS FROM
בין
bin
To discern, understand, or distinguish.
“discerning” in this verse is navon. The word for prudent comes from a root of discernment. A related form means “between,” giving discernment the sense of perceiving distinctions: the heart gains knowledge by noticing what is before it.
ALSO GROWS
binah: Understanding or discernment.
בִּינָה
It names the understanding that grows from the heart’s discerning attention.
bein: Between; among.
בֵּין
This related form suggests discernment as the ability to perceive distinctions.
תְּבַקֶּשׁ
tevaqqesh
GROWS FROM
בקש
baqash
To seek, search for, or request.
“seeketh” in this verse is tevaqqesh. The ear does not merely receive sound; the verb makes it an active seeker of knowledge. The verse places listening inside the pursuit of wisdom.
ALSO GROWS
mevaqqesh: One who seeks or asks.
מְבַקֵּשׁ
It makes visible the active posture carried by the ear’s search.
baqqashah: A request or plea.
בַּקָּשָׁה
This branch shows that seeking can take the form of asking for what is not yet held.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom grows through active attention: the heart discerns, the ear listens, and the seeker remains open to what is not yet known.
So that you bend your ear toward wisdom, and your heart toward discernment.Uncover my eyes, that I may gaze upon the wonders from your instruction. But if any of you is left behind in wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without doubling and without taunting, and it will be given him.THE THREAD
Then you discern the awe of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.The word דַּעַת (daʿat, knowledge) appears in both verses, rooted in יָדַע (yadaʿ, know or perceive). Proverbs 2:5 joins that knowing to understanding awe of the LORD and finding knowledge of God, opening this verse’s heart and ear as two movements within the same search.
