This verse in the King James

King James wording
Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

The verse measures both pleasure and power by fit: delight can be out of place, and authority in the wrong place turns the mismatch into disorder.

The verse speaks now wherever something pleasant is treated as automatically fitting. It places delight in the fool beside a servant ruling princes; the second image makes the mismatch public by rearranging who governs whom.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that more pleasure or greater authority is always an unqualified good: either can become disorder when its place does not fit.

מְשֹׁל

mĕšōl

GROWS FROM

משל

m-š-l

To rule, govern, or exercise dominion.

This root names both the rule over princes here and ordered governance elsewhere. The verse treats authority as a force that sets relations in place, which becomes disruptive when held out of order.

ALSO GROWS

mōshēl: A ruler or governor.

מֹשֵׁל

Genesis 45:8 uses this form for Joseph as “a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt,” placing governing authority in view.

memshālāh: Dominion, rule, or governance.

מֶמְשָׁלָה

In Genesis 1:16, a form of this noun describes the lights’ rule over day and night, showing this root can name an ordering function.

עֶבֶד

eved

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

To work or serve; labor and service.

“servant” in this verse is eved. Eved carries the sense of one who serves or works. The root makes the inversion functional as well as social: the one identified with service is placed over those of princely rank.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāvad: To work or serve.

עָבַד

The verb keeps work and service inside the noun “servant.”

ʿavodah: Work, labor, or service.

עֲבֹדָה

This related noun preserves the service-role within the same word family.

נָאוֶה

nāweh

GROWS FROM

נאה

n-ʾ-h

To be fitting, beautiful, or becoming.

“does not fit” in this verse is nāweh. The root holds fittingness and comeliness together, so “seemly” carries a question of proportion and order as well as appearance. The verse asks whether this delight belongs where it is.

ALSO GROWS

nāweh: Fitting, becoming, or comely.

נָאוֶה

This form supplies the verse’s judgment that delight is not fitting for the fool.

nāʾāh: Lovely or comely.

נָאוָה

Song of Solomon 1:5 uses this form for comeliness, showing the same family can describe beauty.

Authority stays ordered when rank is joined to service, and becomes disruptive when power is placed where it does not fit.

Folly is set on great heights, and the rich settle in the lowland.
Ecclesiastes 10:6 · SDVFolly elevated and the rich lowered make misplaced station visible.
When the aligned are many, the people rejoice; but when the restless rule, the people groan.
Proverbs 29:2 · SDVThe character of the one who rules shapes the well-being of those under that authority.
But you shall not be so. Let the greatest among you become as the younger, and the one going before become as the one serving at table.
Luke 22:26 · SDVThe greatest holds authority in the form of service, joining rank to its proper role.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.
Ecclesiastes 10:7 · SDV

The Hebrew word translated “servants” comes from the same root ⁨עבד⁩ (ʿ-b-d) as “servant” in Proverbs. Ecclesiastes turns the shared word into a visible scene of reversed stations: servants on horses while princes walk as servants on the ground.
