King James wording
King James Version
A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.THE KEY
The verse contrasts a face hardened into force with a way made clear through discernment.
THE MEANING
A forceful, closed face can shield a person from seeing the course they are on. The upright person discerns their way, and that understanding gives direction to the path. The verse speaks now of two postures toward one’s way: hardening against sight or meeting it with understanding.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A hard, unyielding front can look like strength, but it may conceal refusal to understand the way one is taking. The verse locates clarity in discernment, not in the display of certainty.
THE ROOT
יָבִין
yāḇîn
GROWS FROM
בין
b-y-n
Discern, perceive, understand, often by distinguishing between things.
“steadies” in this verse is yāḇîn. The verb behind “directeth” carries the sense of discerning or understanding. The way is guided by seeing it clearly, in contrast with the forceful face that hardens against sight.
ALSO GROWS
bên: Between
בֵּין
The related word for “between” suggests discernment that sees distinctions; the upright person does not move blindly along the way.
bīnāh: Understanding, discernment
בִּינָה
This branch names the kind of understanding through which a path becomes something a person can consider and direct.
הֵעֵז
hēʿēz
GROWS FROM
עזז
ʿ-z-z
Be strong or powerful; in this form, act boldly or defiantly.
“hardens” in this verse is hēʿēz. The root carries force and intensity, so hardening the face is a display of strength. Here that force stands opposite the careful discernment of the way.
ALSO GROWS
ʿaz: Strong, fierce
עַז
This branch carries the forcefulness of the hardened face: an imposing front set against reconsideration.
ʿōz: Strength, might
עֹז
The shared root lets “hardening” carry the shade of strength, while the verse shows that strength alone does not make a way clear.
יָשָׁר
yāšār
GROWS FROM
ישר
y-sh-r
Be straight, level, or right.
“straight one” in this verse is yāšār. The word for “upright” carries the sense of straightness and orientation. The verse shows that orientation in how a person understands their way.
ALSO GROWS
yōšer: Uprightness, straightness
יֹשֶׁר
This branch links upright character with straightness, echoed by the person’s attention to the course ahead.
yešārîm: The upright ones
יְשָׁרִים
The plural form describes people by this straight orientation, which the verse expresses through discerning their way.
THE PATTERN
A person’s direction follows whether they harden against seeing or discern the way before them.
The wisdom of the shrewd is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.I reckon my ways, and I turn back my feet to your witnesses. But the one who bends down to look into the complete instruction of freedom, and stays there, not becoming a hearer who lets it slip, but a doer of the work, this one will be flourishing in his doing.THE THREAD
The wisdom of the shrewd is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.Proverbs 14:8 uses the same Hebrew verb-root בין (bin, discern and understand) and repeats “his way.” It makes explicit what Proverbs 21:29 compresses: the upright person’s course is directed through understanding.
