King James wording
King James Version
He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.THE KEY
Before the harmful plan becomes an act, the one who keeps devising it is already named a master of schemes.
THE MEANING
Your planning is already taking shape before anyone sees its result. When you keep calculating how to do harm, that purpose becomes what others recognize in you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that privately rehearsing harm leaves you unchanged until you act.
THE ROOT
מְחַשֵּׁב
məḥaššēḇ
GROWS FROM
חשב
ḥ-š-b
Think, reckon, calculate, devise.
“schemes” in this verse is məḥaššēḇ. English can make “deviseth” sound like a passing thought; this root also carries the sense of reckoning and calculation. The verse shows thought working out a course toward action.
ALSO GROWS
maḥashavah: Thought, plan, design.
מַחֲשָׁבָה
This related noun makes explicit that devising is thought taking the shape of a plan.
ḥeshbon: Account, reckoning, calculation.
חֶשְׁבּוֹן
The same root links planning with calculation: the scheme is something mentally worked out.
בַּעַל מְזִמּוֹת
baʿal mezimmot
GROWS FROM
זמם
z-m-m
Plan, purpose, devise; בַּעַל מְזִמּוֹת names a “master of schemes.”
Under “mischievous person” is the phrase “master of schemes.” מְזִמָּה (mezimmah) can also mean discretion, showing that the root names the capacity to plan; here, the plan’s aim turns that capacity toward harm.
ALSO GROWS
mezimmah: Plan, purpose, discretion, or scheme.
מְזִמָּה
The word can describe considered purpose in either a constructive or harmful direction; this verse specifies the harmful aim.
zamam: To plan, intend, or devise.
זָמַם
This verb is the act behind the noun: the person is identified by the purpose being formed.
THE PATTERN
What is formed as a plan within becomes visible through the actions it directs.
And the LORD saw that the harm of humankind was great in the earth, and that every shaping of the thoughts of his heart was only harm all the day.Woe to those who devise trouble upon their beds, and work evil in the light of morning, for it is in the might of their hand. For from within, out of the heart of men, come evil weighings, fornications, thefts, murders,THE THREAD
A heart that plows crooked plans, feet that hurry to run toward evil.In Proverbs 24:8, מְחַשֵּׁב (mechashshev, “devising”) and, in Proverbs 6:18, מַחְשְׁבוֹת (machshevot, “imaginations”) come from the same root, חשב. The second verse shows the inner plans behind the name given in the first.
