King James wording
King James Version
As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.THE KEY
A person can keep turning and still go nowhere, like a door swinging on its hinge.
THE MEANING
The door moves within the small circle its hinge allows; the slothful person turns within the boundary of the bed. The verse speaks wherever changing position feels like progress while life remains in the same place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that movement by itself means change: a person can keep shifting and still remain where they began.
THE ROOT
תִּסּוֹב
tisov
GROWS FROM
סבב
to turn, circle, or go around
“turns” in this verse is tisov. The verb names the door’s turning; the slothful person becomes its human echo in the parallel image. The root brings out the difference between motion and departure: a circle can keep moving without leaving its boundary.
ALSO GROWS
saviv: around; surrounding
סָבִיב
This branch gives the turning a boundary: the door moves around its hinge within a limited arc.
sovev: turns about; circles
סוֹבֵב
Ecclesiastes uses this form for the wind circling between south and north, showing how continued motion can describe a circuit without an arrival.
THE PATTERN
Repeated motion can keep a person inside the same circuit instead of carrying them forward.
The breath goes toward the south and turns around to the north; turning and turning, it goes, and upon its circuits it returns. But it befalls them according to the proverb of truth, the dog turns back to his own vomit, and the washed sow goes back to her wallowing in the mire.THE THREAD
The breath goes toward the south and turns around to the north; turning and turning, it goes, and upon its circuits it returns.Ecclesiastes uses another form of סבב (savav, to turn or circle) for the wind’s repeated circuit. The shared root opens the Proverbs image further: motion can continue without becoming departure.
