King James wording
King James Version
When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.THE KEY
A wicked rise can hide righteousness from view, but its end turns concealed alignment into a growing multitude.
THE MEANING
When destructive power rises around you, people hide themselves; their absence from public view does not mean the righteous are gone. When that power ends, those aligned with what is right increase. The verse describes a change in visibility and in who fills the public space, here and now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that silence under wicked rule proves agreement or that righteousness has vanished. People may be hidden, and their increase comes into view when the wicked fall.
THE ROOT
יִסָּתֵר
yissater
GROWS FROM
סתר
s-t-r
to hide or conceal
“hide themselves” in this verse is yissater. The human response to a wicked rise is concealment. Being hidden is not the same as being gone; the verse sets that withdrawal beside the righteous becoming numerous when the wicked end.
ALSO GROWS
seter: secret; concealed place
סֵתֶר
The same root can name what is out of sight, showing how people may withdraw from public view.
nistar: hidden thing; concealed one
נִסְתָּר
This branch makes the distinction between hidden presence and disappearance especially clear.
צַדִּיקִים
tsaddiqim
GROWS FROM
צדק
ts-d-q
rightness, justice, alignment
The word rendered “righteous” carries the sense of alignment with what is right. Their increase is a growing presence of people aligned with justice, not merely the survival of private virtue.
ALSO GROWS
tsedeq: rightness; justice
צֶדֶק
It shows the shared root’s connection to what is right and just.
tsedaqah: righteousness; justice; charitable giving
צְדָקָה
It extends alignment into acts that uphold others, giving the righteous increase a social dimension.
וּבְאָבְדָם
u-ve’ovdam
GROWS FROM
אבד
ʾ-b-d
to perish, be lost, disappear
“perish” in this verse is u-ve’ovdam. The wicked do not merely lose status; the verse describes their perishing. This root also names what is lost or destroyed, sharpening the contrast with the righteous becoming more numerous.
ALSO GROWS
ʾoved: lost; perishing
אֹבֵד
It names one who is lost or perishing, carrying the verse’s ending into the language of loss.
ʾabaddon: destruction; ruin
אֲבַדּוֹן
This branch shows the root’s connection to disappearance through destruction.
THE PATTERN
When wickedness loses its hold, people aligned with what is right become visible and flourish.
When it goes well with the aligned, the city leaps, and when the wicked perish, there is a ringing cry.In his days the aligned one blooms, and wholeness in abundance until the moon is no more. Then the aligned will shine out as the sun in the governance of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear and respond.THE THREAD
When it goes well with the aligned, the city leaps, and when the wicked perish, there is a ringing cry. Both verses use אָבַד (ʾābad, “perish; be lost”) for the wicked coming to an end. Proverbs 11:10 shows the city’s relief; Proverbs 28:28 reveals the deeper consequence: the aligned become numerous.
