King James wording
King James Version
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.THE KEY
The Hebrew joins knowing God by encounter to a path being made straight: guidance takes shape within the whole course of your life.
THE MEANING
Your whole course is where you know him, including the ordinary parts of life. As you know him there, he makes straight the path you are walking, clearing its way before you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that you must see the whole route before guidance can reach you: the promise is that the path is made straight as you know him along the way.
THE ROOT
דָעֵהוּ
daʿēhû
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know, perceive, or recognize through relationship and encounter.
“perceive” in this verse is daʿēhû. The word translated “acknowledge” carries the sense of knowing him, not merely noting that he exists. Its root can describe intimate knowing, so the verse places lived relationship at the center of guidance.
ALSO GROWS
daʿat: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
The same root names knowing as something held and lived, giving “acknowledge him” depth beyond recognition.
wayyēdaʿ: A form of the verb “to know,” used for intimate knowing.
וַיֵּדַע
This branch shows the root’s relational depth: knowing God reaches beyond information into encounter.
יְיַשֵּׁר
yĕyaššēr
GROWS FROM
ישר
To be straight, level, or upright; in this form, to make straight.
“straightens” in this verse is yĕyaššēr. The Hebrew verb pictures the path itself being made straight and level. The guidance here clears crookedness from the way and makes the course traversable.
ALSO GROWS
yāšār: Straight or upright.
יָשָׁר
The same root gives the quality of the path God makes: straightness and uprightness.
mîšôr: A level place or plain.
מִישׁוֹר
This branch brings out the terrain in the promise: the way is leveled for the journey.
אֹרְחֹתֶיךָ
ʾorḥōteḵā
GROWS FROM
ארח
To journey or travel.
“paths” in this verse is ʾorḥōteḵā. The path is a course of travel, bound to the movement of the one who walks it. God makes straight the route as it is being lived, not as an abstract line apart from you.
ALSO GROWS
ʾōraḥ: A path or course of travel.
אֹרַח
This is the singular form behind “paths,” linking the promise directly to a journey’s course.
ʾōrēaḥ: A traveler or guest.
אֹרֵחַ
The related word for a traveler shares the root with the path, joining the route to the one journeying it.
THE PATTERN
Guidance is encountered within the path itself and becomes a way to walk.
I make you wise, and I teach you in the way you walk. I guide you with my eye upon you.Your ears will hear and respond to a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," whether you turn to the right hand or to the left.My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.THE THREAD
But let the one who boasts boast in this, that he discerns and perceives me, that I am the LORD who does faithful love, judgment, and alignment in the earth. For in these things I delight, says the LORD.Jeremiah uses the same Hebrew root for “knoweth” that Proverbs uses for “acknowledge.” Here that knowing is tied to perceiving the LORD in the lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness he enacts.
