This verse in the King James

King James wording
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

The same “way” names four forms of passage, including intimacy, whose movement is real even when no trail survives.

You see four courses that cannot be followed by footprints: through the air, over a rock, across the sea, and between a man and a young woman. The last image carries an intimate, sexual charge; the next verse places it beside an adulterous woman’s denial. The verse holds wonder and concealment together without showing how the trace disappears.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that no visible trace means no real passage; the verse names movements that happen even when nothing remains to follow.

דֶּרֶךְ

derek

GROWS FROM

דרך

To tread, step, or travel; a trodden course.

“path” in this verse is derek. Hebrew uses the same consonants for “way” and “to tread”: a way is motion made into a course. Here that word spans an eagle, a serpent, a ship, and a man with a young woman, joining paths whose traces vanish after passage.

ALSO GROWS

darak: To tread, step, or travel.

דָּרַךְ

The verb shows that a “way” is not only a route but movement passing through a place.

derek: A road, course, way, or manner.

דֶּרֶךְ

The noun gathers very different kinds of motion under one word, including the intimate human passage at the end of the verse.

A real movement can exceed observation: its course is present even when no eye can trace it.

There is a path no bird of prey has known, and the falcon's eye has not glimpsed it.
Job 28:7 · SDVLike the eagle’s way through the air, this path exists beyond even a bird’s sight.
As you do not perceive the way of the breath, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is filled and conceives, so you do not perceive the making of God, who makes all.
Ecclesiastes 11:5 · SDVThe way of the breath and the forming of bones remain real while their course escapes your knowledge.
The breath blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so is everyone who is born of breath.
John 3:8 · SDVThe moving breath is heard, yet its route cannot be located from where it starts or where it goes.
Your way is in the sea, and your trail in the many waters, and your footprints are not perceived.
Psalm 77:19 · SDV

Psalm 77 uses the same Hebrew word, derek (⁨דֶּרֶךְ⁩, way), for a course through the sea, then says its footsteps are unknown. The ship’s passage through water belongs to this same image: movement happens, but its track disappears.
