King James wording
King James Version
There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:THE KEY
The earth’s smallest creatures expose how little size has to do with wisdom.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two realities together: these creatures are little upon the earth, and they are exceedingly wise. Their size does not measure their capacity; wisdom can appear where the eye least expects it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Smallness means incapacity. This verse places little stature beside exceptional wisdom and breaks that equation.
THE ROOT
חֲכָמִים מְחֻכָּמִים
ḥăkāmîm məḥukkāmîm
GROWS FROM
חכם
to be wise; wisdom
“exceeding wise” in this verse is ḥăkāmîm məḥukkāmîm. The Hebrew places two forms from the חכם family together, and “exceeding” carries their emphatic force. These creatures are not merely almost wise: the verse makes wisdom their defining quality despite their small stature.
ALSO GROWS
ḥokhmāh: wisdom
חָכְמָה
The same root names wisdom itself, showing that the small creatures embody a quality, not just an appearance of cleverness.
ḥākām: a wise person
חָכָם
The word for a wise person shares this root, applying the language of wisdom to creatures whose size might invite underestimation.
ḥākam: to be wise
חָכַם
The verb names the state of being wise; here the verse presents that quality as already present in the small.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom appears through beings or forms the world ranks as low, breaking the assumption that insight tracks status or power.
But ask now the beasts, and they point you the way; the birds of the heavens, and they tell you.In that season Jesus answered, and said, I give thanks to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have covered these things from the wise and the discerning, and have uncovered them to the infants. But God picked out the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; and God picked out the weak things of the world to shame the strong.THE THREAD
Go to the ant, you slack one; see her ways, and be wise. Both verses use חכם (ḥ-k-m, “to be wise”): Proverbs 6:6 calls the reader to become wise by considering the ant, while Proverbs 30:24 calls small creatures exceedingly wise. The shared root makes the ant a living instance of the claim.
