This verse in the King James

King James wording
They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.

The rise and descent are not escapes from the design; both lead toward a place already founded.

The waters rise beside the mountains and descend through the valleys, yet their movement leads to a place already founded for them. The verse speaks now of change held within a prepared order: a downward passage can still belong to the place that holds you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that descent means you have fallen outside the design: the valley, too, lies on the way to the established place.

יָסַדְתָּ

yasadta

GROWS FROM

יסד

To lay a foundation; to establish.

“lay” in this verse is yasadta. The Hebrew verb carries the act of laying a foundation: this place is set on something. The rising and descending belong to a founded order, not random motion.

ALSO GROWS

yesod: Foundation, basis.

יְסוֹד

This related noun makes the foundation beneath the appointed place explicit.

mosad: Foundation, base.

מוֹסָד

This branch carries the same establishing root into the supporting base that holds something in place.

בְקָעוֹת

beqa'ot

GROWS FROM

בקע

To split or cleave open.

“valleys” in this verse is beqa'ot. The valley is more than a low spot: its word grows from the root for splitting or cleaving open. Beside the founded place, the cleft itself belongs to the terrain through which the waters move.

ALSO GROWS

biq'ah: Valley, broad cleft or plain.

בִּקְעָה

This related form names the opened terrain the waters descend through.

nivqe'u: They split open.

נִבְקְעוּ

The same root describes something breaking open, revealing the force contained in the word for valley.

Even creation’s dramatic movement follows a place and boundary established by God.

And God said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be pooled into one place, and let the dry land be seen." And it was so.
Genesis 1:9 · SDVThe waters gather and dry land appears at God’s command, as movement resolves toward an appointed place.
And said, This far shall you come, but no further, and here shall your swelling waves be held?
Job 38:11 · SDVThe sea’s force meets a boundary that marks where its movement ends.
And waking, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Be silent. Be muzzled. And the wind wore itself out, and a great calm came.
Mark 4:39 · SDVThe wind and sea settle at the command of the one who holds authority over their movement.
He lays the earth upon its footing, and it does not totter for the ages and ages.
Psalm 104:5 · SDV

The Hebrew word for “founded” in verse 8 shares its ⁨יסד⁩ (yasad, to lay a foundation) root with the foundations laid in verse 5. The earth’s shifting heights and depths move within a structure already established.
