King James wording
King James Version
He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth.THE KEY
“Our God” and “all the earth” belong in one claim: divine belonging does not limit the reach of divine justice.
THE MEANING
The LORD is named as our God, and his judgments reach across the whole earth. The place you inhabit lies within that reach; no part of the world sits outside the justice he sees.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that God’s judgments are confined to one sacred place is undone here: they are in all the earth.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁפָּטִים
mishpatim
GROWS FROM
שפט
שפט (sh-p-t; shaphat): to judge, decide a case, or exercise judgment.
Mishpatim names the judgments formed from the act of judging; its plural places those decisions throughout the earth. The same root names both the judge and the judgment, joining God’s identity to the order expressed across the world.
ALSO GROWS
shaphat: To judge or decide a case.
שָׁפַט
This verb is the act beneath the judgments that the verse says reach all the earth.
shofet: A judge.
שֹׁפֵט
The judge and the judgments share the same root, linking who God is with the justice he enacts.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s just rule reaches every people and place, and the whole earth lives within its scope.
He is the Rock; whole is his work, for all his ways are judgment. A God of steadiness, without crookedness, aligned and straight is he.Before the face of the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth; he judges the world in alignment, and the peoples in his steadiness.Because he has set a day in which he will judge the settled world in alignment, by the man whom he has marked out, giving all people trust through raising him up from among the dead.THE THREAD
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king. He will deliver us.The Hebrew word for “judge,” shofet (שֹׁפֵט), shares the root שפט with the “judgments,” mishpatim (מִשְׁפָּטִים), in Psalm 105:7. Isaiah names the judge; the psalm shows those judgments reaching across the earth.
