King James wording
King James Version
They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.THE KEY
Whatever you treat as your source of safety quietly becomes the shape of your own life.
THE MEANING
What you rely on shapes what you become. A powerless image cannot see, hear, speak, or move; the one who makes it and the one who trusts it grow toward its limits. The verse shows trust as formative: you become like what you count on for security.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Trust is not a neutral feeling that leaves you unchanged; what you rely on forms you.
THE ROOT
בָּטַח
batach
GROWS FROM
ב־ט־ח
b-t-ḥ
To trust, rely on, or feel secure.
“leans on” in this verse is batach. This root connects trust with felt security: what you lean on is where you feel safe. The verse reveals that reliance does more than express confidence; it draws you toward the nature and limits of what you trust.
ALSO GROWS
mibtach: Confidence, refuge, or a source of security.
מִבְטָח
This branch makes the verse’s trust concrete: the idol is treated as a refuge, though it cannot act or respond.
betach: Security; securely or confidently.
בֶּטַח
The same root family links reliance with the condition of feeling secure, showing why the object of trust can shape a person’s life.
עֹשֵׂיהֶם
ʿoseihem
GROWS FROM
ע־שׂ־ה
ʿ-ś-h
To do or make.
The word for “makers” comes from the broad verb for doing and making. The verse sets their work beside the likeness they take on: what their hands make stands before them, and their lives become like it.
ALSO GROWS
ʿasah: To do or make.
עָשָׂה
This is the verb behind “makers,” linking the act of making with ordinary action and practice.
maʿaseh: A deed, work, or thing made.
מַעֲשֶׂה
This branch names both an action and its result, echoing the verse’s link between what a person makes and the likeness that person takes on.
THE PATTERN
What a person looks to and lives alongside shapes that person toward its own nature.
Those who make them become like them, and so does everyone who leans his weight on them. But we all, with uncovered faces, mirror the weight of the LORD, and are being reshaped into the same image, ever increasing in weight, even as from the breath of the LORD.The one who walks with the wise becomes wise; the one who grazes beside the dull is broken.THE THREAD
Those who make them become like them, and so does everyone who leans his weight on them. This verse repeats the same line and the same root בָּטַח (batach, to trust or feel secure). Together the two passages make the link unmistakable: both making and reliance form likeness.
