King James wording
King James Version
I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.THE KEY
The way of instruction becomes runnable as the heart becomes spacious; movement follows the opening, not pressure.
THE MEANING
Your heart is the inner space from which you move, and this verse presents it as something that can widen. As that space opens, the way of the commandments becomes a path you can run. The text places the widening before the speed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that meaningful obedience comes from tightening yourself harder: the verse locates free movement in an enlarged heart.
THE ROOT
תַּרְחִיב
tarḥiv
GROWS FROM
רחב
To be broad or spacious; to make wide.
“widen” in this verse is tarḥiv. The word translated “enlarge” comes from the root רחב (rachav), which carries the image of widening and spaciousness. English can make this sound like a change in feeling alone, but the root lets the heart become a wide place: the path can be run because there is room within.
ALSO GROWS
merḥav: A wide or spacious place.
מֶרְחָב
The same root can describe open space outside a person, linking the heart’s widening with a place where movement is possible.
reḥov: A broad street or open square.
רְחוֹב
This branch gives widening a public, walkable shape: spaciousness is room to move through.
THE PATTERN
Inner widening turns a constricted route into a path that can be moved through freely.
He brings me out into a broad place; he pulls me loose, because he delights in me.Then you shall see and flow together, and your heart shall tremble and widen, for the abundance of the sea shall turn to you; the strength of the nations shall come to you.O Corinthians, our mouth is open toward you, our heart is widened.THE THREAD
He brings me out into a broad place; he pulls me loose, because he delights in me.The “large place” is מֶרְחָב (merḥav), formed from the same root רחב (rachav) as “enlarge.” What appears here as the heart widening appears there as being brought into spaciousness: the inner opening and the outer room share one image.
