This verse in the King James

King James wording
A Song of degrees of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

Israel’s voice begins by naming that its life depends on the LORD being for it.

The verse meets you where an outcome feels uncertain: your life is not presented as self-sustaining, because the decisive phrase is that the LORD is for you. Israel speaks this dependence aloud, holding danger and the presence that sustains it in the same sentence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that getting through depends on your strength alone; the verse places your life within the LORD’s being-for you.

שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ

shehayah lanu

GROWS FROM

היה

To be, become, or come to pass.

“at our side” in this verse is shehayah lanu. The Hebrew phrase means “who was for us”: the root centers the LORD’s being-for Israel. The same root appears in forms translated “I am / I will be” and “it came to be,” grounding Israel’s words in presence.

ALSO GROWS

ehyeh: I am / I will be

אֶהְיֶה

This first-person form of the same root makes being itself the language of presence.

vayehi: And it was / and it came to be

וַיְהִי

This common form shows the root describing what comes to be, illuminating the weight of the LORD’s being for Israel.

A people can face danger truthfully when they name the presence that is for them.

The LORD is at my side; I do not fear. What can humankind do to me?
Psalm 118:6 · SDVThe same confession becomes personal: the LORD is for the speaker, even as danger remains.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 · SDVThe verse makes being-for the ground from which a person can face opposition.
To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a help found very near in the narrow place.
Psalm 46:1 · SDVHere, God’s presence is named as help within trouble, not as a denial that trouble exists.
The LORD is at my side; I do not fear. What can humankind do to me?
Psalm 118:6 · SDV

Psalm 118 gives the same “for me” relation in an individual voice, then names the fear it loosens. Psalm 124 speaks collectively as Israel; this verse lets you hear the same confession personally.
