This verse in the King James

King James wording
A Song of degrees. Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.

The verse calls a person flourishing when awe of the LORD takes visible form in the direction their life walks.

The verse names flourishing as a present way of being: awe of the LORD is visible in the path your life takes. Reverence and walking belong together here; the walk gives awe a direction in ordinary life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that fearing the LORD means living in panic: here, fear carries the sense of awe, joined to a way of walking.

אַשְׁרֵי

ashrei

GROWS FROM

אשר

ʾ-š-r

The word family links flourishing and being counted fortunate with advancing or going straight.

The verse opens with ashrei, meaning flourishing. Its word family also carries the language of advancing and calling someone fortunate, so flourishing sounds alongside movement, the very movement named by “walketh.”

ALSO GROWS

ʾāšar: Advance, go straight.

אָשַׁר

This verbal branch lets flourishing carry a sense of forward movement.

ʾishshēr: Call fortunate, count blessed (Piel form).

אִשֵּׁר

The verse names the one who flourishes; this branch names the act of recognizing that state.

יְרֵא

yərēʾ

GROWS FROM

ירא

y-r-ʾ

Fear, revere, stand in awe.

“in awe of” in this verse is yərēʾ. The English word “fear” can suggest a response to threat, while this root also carries reverence and awe. Joined to walking, awe becomes an orientation expressed across a whole way of life.

ALSO GROWS

yirʾah: Fear or awe.

יִרְאָה

This noun form holds both shades, making room for the reverent awe directed toward the LORD in this verse.

nōrāʾ: Awe-inspiring or fearsome.

נוֹרָא

This related form describes what evokes awe, connecting the posture of reverence with the quality that calls it forth.

הֹלֵךְ

holekh

GROWS FROM

הלך

h-l-k

Walk, go, travel.

“walks” in this verse is holekh. The form here describes one who is walking, keeping the motion present. Beside awe, it shows that reverence takes shape as an ongoing direction, not an isolated feeling.

ALSO GROWS

hālak: Walk or go.

הָלַךְ

This is the verbal root beneath “walketh,” keeping physical movement audible in the verse.

halikhah: Walking, course, or conduct.

הֲלִיכָה

This related noun extends walking into the course a person follows.

Flourishing takes shape when awe of the LORD becomes a lived path.

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you, but to stand in awe of the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your living soul,
Deuteronomy 10:12 · SDVAwe and walking appear together in one line, as joined expressions of a life turned toward the LORD.
Then the assemblies had wholeness throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were built up. And walking in the awe of the LORD and in the comfort of the Set-Apart Breath, they were multiplied.
Acts 9:31 · SDVThe verse names walking in the fear of the Lord as an ongoing way of life.
Flourishing is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of those who miss the mark, nor sit in the seat of the scoffers.
Psalm 1:1 · SDV

Psalm 1:1 opens with the same ⁨אַשְׁרֵי⁩ (ashrei, flourishing) and uses ⁨הָלַךְ⁩ (hālak, walk/go) for the path a person does not follow. The shared words join flourishing to walking, while the two psalms reveal the path by what it follows and what it leaves.
