This verse in the King James

King James wording
A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Unity has a place to live: it appears as kin inhabiting life together.

Togetherness is good and pleasant now when kin share an inhabited life. The verse gives unity a concrete shape: brothers gathered into one sustained presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that unity requires sameness: the verse names many brothers dwelling together as unity.

יַחַד

yaḥad

GROWS FROM

יחד

y-ḥ-d

To join or be together; unity.

⁨יַחַד⁩ names togetherness, while its related form ⁨יָחִיד⁩ can mean a single or solitary one. Beside the plural “brothers,” that connection lets unity hold distinct people together without erasing their difference.

ALSO GROWS

yachdav: Together, jointly.

יַחְדָּו

This related form appears in Psalm 34:3 for people exalting the LORD’s name together, showing the root can describe shared action as well as shared presence.

yachid: Only, solitary, unique.

יָחִיד

The related form carries the sense of one or solitary; beside “brothers,” it highlights unity as a bond among distinct people.

שֶׁבֶת

shevet

GROWS FROM

ישב

y-sh-b

To sit, remain, or dwell.

“settle” in this verse is shevet. The form ⁨שֶׁבֶת⁩ carries the sense of sitting or settling, giving “dwell” the texture of remaining in a shared place. Unity here is sustained presence among kin.

ALSO GROWS

moshav: Dwelling place, settlement, or seat.

מוֹשָׁב

This branch makes dwelling concrete: the verse’s unity has the shape of a place shared by kin.

yoshev: One who sits, stays, or dwells.

יֹשֵׁב

This branch pictures the people who inhabit that shared place, grounding unity in their continued presence.

Unity takes shape when distinct people share a life, place, or purpose.

Two are better than one, because they have good wages for their toil.
Ecclesiastes 4:9 · SDVThe shared life of two people yields a good that is present in their working together.
When the day of Pentecost was fully filled, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:1 · SDVMany people occupy one place together, giving their shared purpose a visible form.
pressing to keep the oneness of the breath in the binding of wholeness.
Ephesians 4:3 · SDVUnity is held among people through a bond that connects them.
O grow the LORD great with me, and let us lift up his name together.
Psalm 34:3 · SDV

Psalm 133 uses ⁨יַחַד⁩ (yaḥad, “together”), and Psalm 34 uses ⁨יַחְדָּו⁩ (yachdav, “together”), forms from the same root family. One pictures kin sharing a dwelling; the other gives togetherness a shared voice in praise.
