King James wording
King James Version
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.THE KEY
The “wicked way” is also named with a word for pain, and the verse asks for that painful course to be seen so another path can take its place.
THE MEANING
You can ask for the path taking shape within you to be seen, and to be led into a way that lasts. The Hebrew speaks of a “way of pain” (דֶּרֶךְ עֹצֶב, derekh ʿōṣeb) and a “way of the ages” (דֶּרֶךְ עוֹלָם, derekh ʿolām): the painful course is exposed as another way opens.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a painful pattern is your identity or your only available way: the verse asks for it to be seen and for another way to lead.
THE ROOT
עֹצֶב
ʿōṣeb
GROWS FROM
ע־צ־ב
ʿ-ṣ-b
To hurt or grieve; pain and sorrow.
“of pain” in this verse is ʿōṣeb. עֹצֶב (ʿōṣeb, pain or grief) gives the phrase a felt texture: a way characterized by hurt. This adds depth to “wicked way,” letting you hear the distress within the path the speaker asks to have seen.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāṣab: To hurt or grieve.
עָצַב
The verb carries the root’s painful force, illuminating the quality of the way named in the verse.
ʿiṣṣāḇôn: Pain, painful toil.
עִצָּבוֹן
This related noun carries the root into experienced pain and toil, echoing the distress held in עֹצֶב (ʿōṣeb, pain or grief).
דֶּרֶךְ
derekh
GROWS FROM
ד־ר־ך
d-r-k
To tread or step; by extension, a path or way.
The same דֶּרֶךְ (derekh, way) names both courses in the verse. Its root pictures treading, so the prayer sets a painful path alongside the enduring way into which the speaker asks to be led.
ALSO GROWS
dāraḵ: To tread or step.
דָּרַךְ
The verb links a way to the movement of feet across ground.
midrāḵ: A place for treading; a footstep or foothold.
מִדְרָךְ
This branch makes the path tangible as ground made traversable by steps.
THE PATTERN
The inner path is brought into view so the reader can receive guidance into a fuller way.
Show me your ways, LORD; teach me your paths. But the path of the aligned is like gleaming light, walking and shining until the day stands firm.Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.THE THREAD
He turns back my living soul; he leads me in the tracks of alignment for the sake of his nature.“Lead me” here and “he leadeth me” in Psalm 23:3 share the Hebrew root נחה (nāḥâ, guide or lead). The connected verse reveals that this leading is also restoration: guidance turns the inner course toward right paths.
