King James wording
King James Version
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.THE KEY
The hand upon you completes the enclosure: there is no exposed side of you.
THE MEANING
You are hemmed in behind and before, with a hand resting upon you. The nearness reaches around you and touches you; no direction lies outside that contact.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that some side of your life is exposed beyond God’s reach.
THE ROOT
צַרְתָּנִי
tsartani
GROWS FROM
צור
To bind, confine, enclose, or besiege.
“press in” in this verse is tsartani. This verb carries the force of enclosure and siege, not only of someone standing near. Its sound echoes צַר (tsar, narrow or tight), letting the enclosure retain a sense of pressure; the palm laid upon you makes that image bodily.
ALSO GROWS
matsor: Siege or encirclement.
מָצוֹר
This related form shows the force of being surrounded on every side that the English word “beset” can hide.
tsur: Rock.
צוּר
This related noun brings firmness into the boundary image while leaving its pressure intact.
THE PATTERN
The divine presence surrounds the reader across every direction and place.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people, from now to the ages. Can anyone hide in hidden places that I shall not see him? says the LORD. Do I not fill the heavens and the earth? says the LORD.Let your way of living be without the love of silver, and let what is at hand be enough, for he has said, I will never let go of you, nor leave you behind.THE THREAD
Even there your hand leads me, and your right hand grasps me.The hand laid upon you in verse 5 becomes the hand that leads and holds in verse 10. Even “there,” the surrounding presence reaches you.
