King James wording
King James Version
It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.THE KEY
The verse calls deliverance a gift that carries the threatened beyond the sword’s narrowing reach.
THE MEANING
When danger narrows what seems possible, this verse presents deliverance as something given, not something the threatened person must manufacture. Kings and servants receive from the same source; the sword remains real, but it does not have the final word.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A king’s power is not the source of his survival, and the sword’s danger does not determine the outcome.
THE ROOT
תְּשׁוּעָה
teshuʿah
GROWS FROM
ישע
To deliver, to bring out of constriction into a spacious place of safety.
The verse’s “salvation” is deliverance from the sword’s narrowing reach. It is given: the same God gives it to kings and rescues David, so status cannot manufacture safety.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: To deliver or bring into safety.
יָשַׁע
This verb carries the movement of rescue that the verse names as a gift.
yeshuah: Deliverance, rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun shares the root’s sense of being brought out of danger.
moshia: Deliverer, one who rescues.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
The branch names the one who brings the threatened into safety.
דָּוִד
Dawid
GROWS FROM
דוד
Beloved; affection and close kinship.
The name carries belovedness into the verse: David is both God’s servant and a person in danger. The rescue meets him while the sword remains a real threat.
ALSO GROWS
dod: Beloved; also a close male relative or uncle.
דּוֹד
This is the word-family behind David’s name as “the beloved.”
dodim: Love, affection, or caresses.
דּוֹדִים
This related form makes the name’s language of belovedness visible.
THE PATTERN
Deliverance is given within real danger, carrying the threatened beyond the reach of what constricts them.
And Moses said to the people, Do not fear, take your stand, and see the deliverance of the LORD, which he will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again for the ages. The aligned cry out, and the LORD hears, and snatches them out of all their narrow places. And the Lord will bring me out of every evil work, and will deliver me into his heavenly governance; to whom let there be weight for the ages of the ages. Amen.THE THREAD
And Moses said to the people, Do not fear, take your stand, and see the deliverance of the LORD, which he will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again for the ages.“Salvation” here and “salvation” in Exodus 14:13 belong to the same Hebrew root, ישע (yasha), deliverance that brings the threatened into safety. Psalm 144 names the sword; Exodus names the sea and pursuers, the same root carries rescue into danger that is still present.
