King James wording
King James Version
Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.THE KEY
What the KJV calls “everlasting” is “ages,” while “all generations” brings that vast span into the succession of lives happening now.
THE MEANING
God’s governance spans every age and remains present through each generation, including the one you inhabit. Generations pass, yet the reign does not run out with them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that God’s reign belongs to a vanished age or can be exhausted by the end of a generation.
THE ROOT
עוֹלָם
ʿolam
GROWS FROM
ע־ל־ם
ʿ-l-m
עוֹלָם (ʿolam) means an age or distant duration; it is traditionally associated with עָלַם (ʿālam), meaning to hide or conceal.
The Hebrew in “an everlasting kingdom” is מַלְכוּת כָּל־עוֹלָמִים (malkut kol-ʿolamim, a kingdom of all ages). The verse holds that sweep of ages together with בְּכָל־דּוֹר וָדוֹר (bəḵol-dōr vāḏōr, in every generation and generation): vast time and each passing generation belong to the same span.
ALSO GROWS
ʿolam: Age, long duration
עוֹלָם
Its plural form, עוֹלָמִים (ʿolamim), appears here and opens “everlasting” into ages upon ages.
ʿālam: To hide or conceal
עָלַם
This traditional root connection gives an echo of time stretching beyond ordinary sight, while the verse’s direct sense remains “ages.”
מַלְכוּת
malkut
GROWS FROM
מ־ל־ך
m-l-k
To reign or rule as king.
מַלְכוּת (malkut) can name kingship or kingdom: the rule itself, not only the place it governs. The verse presents that governance as spanning every age and every generation.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: King
מֶלֶךְ
The kingdom is tied to the one who reigns; its continuity is the continuity of that rule.
mālaḵ: To reign
מָלַךְ
This verbal branch makes the kingdom active: it is a reign that continues through the generations.
THE PATTERN
God’s reign remains through every age and each generation that succeeds another.
How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His governance is a governance of the ages, and his dominion is from generation to generation. And he will reign over the house of Jacob for the ages, and of his governance there will be no end.And the seventh messenger blows the trumpet, and great voices sound in heaven, saying, The governance of the world becomes the governance of our Lord and of his Anointed One, and he reigns into the ages of the ages.THE THREAD
How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His governance is a governance of the ages, and his dominion is from generation to generation.Daniel uses the same Hebrew word for “kingdom,” מַלְכוּת (malkut, kingship or kingdom), and pairs it with dominion that continues “from generation to generation.” The parallel makes Psalm 145’s two measures of time visible: all ages, and every generation within them.
