King James wording
King James Version
They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.THE KEY
The LORD is called the speaker’s “stay” because the Hebrew pictures support as something a person can lean their full weight on while calamity reaches them.
THE MEANING
When trouble reaches you, the verse names the LORD as your support there. Safety is not described as the absence of attack, but as being held up while danger is present.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that trouble reaching you proves you have been left without support; the verse names both the calamity and the support beneath the speaker.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁעָן
mishʿān
GROWS FROM
שׁען
sh-ʿ-n
Lean on, rely on; support.
“my prop” in this verse is mishʿān. The noun pictures support as something a person leans on. Calamity arrives, yet the speaker has a support that can bear his weight.
ALSO GROWS
shaʿan: Lean on, rely on.
שָׁעַן
The same root makes support an act of placing weight on what can hold you.
mishʿenet: Staff, support.
מִשְׁעֶנֶת
A staff gives the root’s idea of support a tangible form: something that steadies a person.
קִדְּמוּנִי
qiddemuni
GROWS FROM
קדם
q-d-m
Come before, meet, confront.
“meet me” in this verse is qiddemuni. The Hebrew verb comes from קדם (q-d-m, “come before” or “meet”). The KJV’s “prevented” carries its older sense of being met or confronted first, so the verse keeps the danger in view even as it names the speaker’s support.
ALSO GROWS
qadam: Come before, meet.
קָדַם
This verb shows the action in the verse: the danger meets the speaker in the day of calamity.
qedem: Front, east; former time.
קֶדֶם
The shared idea of what is in front or before helps illuminate the force of being met by danger.
THE PATTERN
God’s support holds a person under pressure while danger is still present.
The ancient God is your dwelling, and underneath are the arms of the ages. He drives the enemy from your face, and he says, Destroy.Though he falls, he will not be hurled down, for the LORD props him up with his hand.So that we may boldly say, The LORD is my helper, and I will not fear. What will a human do to me?THE THREAD
And it will come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and the escape of the house of Jacob, will no longer keep leaning their full weight upon the one who struck them, but they will lean their full weight upon the LORD, the Set-Apart One of Israel, in truth.Isaiah uses the same שען (shaʿan, “lean on” or “rely on”) root in “stay upon.” Psalm 18 names the LORD as support; Isaiah makes the image explicit as placing one’s weight on the LORD.
