King James wording
King James Version
By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.THE KEY
The heavens take form through the LORD’s word, while the same mouth’s breath fills them with their host.
THE MEANING
The world around you holds form and fullness together: the LORD’s word makes the heavens, and the breath from his mouth gives life to their host. Creation is not presented as an empty structure; breath belongs to its making.
THE ROOT
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוח
Wind, moving air, breath.
The same Hebrew word can name breath and wind, joining the air that moves through the world with the breath from the LORD’s mouth. The heavens’ host is formed through that living movement, not through a separate force.
ALSO GROWS
ravach: To have room, breathe freely, or find relief.
רָוַח
This branch carries breath toward spaciousness: the breath in the verse belongs to a movement that opens room for life.
ruachot: Winds; the plural form of ruach.
רוּחוֹת
The plural shows the same word moving through the air as winds, widening the verse’s breath beyond a sound made by the mouth.
דָּבָר
davar
GROWS FROM
דבר
To speak; the related noun can mean a word, matter, or thing.
The Hebrew family of davar holds speech alongside matter or a thing. Here, the LORD’s word is not only an utterance: it belongs to the making of what exists.
ALSO GROWS
dibber: To speak; the verbal form of the root.
דִּבֶּר
This branch names the speaking action behind the word through which the heavens are made.
devarim: Words, matters, or things.
דְּבָרִים
This plural carries both speech and matters, bringing the spoken word and the made heavens into one root family.
THE PATTERN
Creation comes through the LORD’s utterance and breath, joining form with living fullness.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. The breath of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive. All things came to be through him, and apart from him not one thing came to be that has come to be.THE THREAD
You send out your breath, and they are created; you renew the face of the ground. This verse uses רוּחַ (ruach, breath), the same Hebrew word translated “spirit” here, and joins it directly to creation and renewal. It opens Psalm 33:6 further: the breath from the LORD’s mouth belongs to the making and renewing of the living world.
