King James wording
King James Version
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.THE KEY
Flourishing begins in the insight that lets the lowly person remain visible.
THE MEANING
Flourishing is joined to the way you see the person brought low: their need does not vanish from your attention. When your own day of harm arrives, the LORD brings you through it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this dissolves is that the lowly person’s trouble has nothing to do with your own flourishing. The verse connects your deliverance with clear-sighted regard for the person in need.
THE ROOT
מַשְׂכִּיל
maskil
GROWS FROM
שׂכל
to have insight, act with discernment, or prosper
“attends to” in this verse is maskil. The word describes someone acting with insight toward the lowly. Here, considering is more than a passing glance: it is discernment made visible in how another person is regarded.
ALSO GROWS
sekel: insight, understanding
שֵׂכֶל
This branch shows the perception inside the act of considering.
hiskil: to act with insight or prosper
הִשְׂכִּיל
The same root connects discernment with action, making the regard described here something lived out.
דַּל
dal
GROWS FROM
דלל
to be low, weakened, or diminished
“the bowed low” in this verse is dal. The poor here are the dal: those brought low or made vulnerable. The verse places attention at the point of diminishment, then speaks of deliverance when the attentive person faces a day of harm.
ALSO GROWS
dallut: poverty, weakness
דַּלּוּת
This branch shows that the word carries the sense of being diminished as well as having little.
dalal: to grow weak or become diminished
דָּלַל
The verb brings the image of the lowly into focus as someone whose strength or standing has been reduced.
יְמַלְּטֵהוּ
yemallethehu
GROWS FROM
מלט
to escape or bring someone safely out of danger
“delivers” in this verse is yemallethehu. The promise is movement out of danger: the LORD makes him escape his own day of harm. The trouble is named, but it does not become the place where he remains trapped.
ALSO GROWS
nimlat: escaped, got away
נִמְלַט
This form pictures a person making it out of danger, echoing the promise made here.
himmalet: to escape, get away
הִמָּלֵט
This branch makes the movement in deliverance concrete: getting out from under danger.
THE PATTERN
Flourishing and divine regard gather around the person who sees or lifts the one brought low.
The one who makes light of the one beside him misses the mark, but flourishing is the one who favors the bowed down.He raises the bowed one from the dust, and lifts the one in want from the ash heap;Hear, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose the emptied ones of this world, rich in trust, and heirs of the governance that he promised to those who love him?THE THREAD
The one who makes light of the one beside him misses the mark, but flourishing is the one who favors the bowed down. Both verses pair ashrei, flourishing, with dal, the person brought low. Proverbs states the same connection from the human side: the lowly person’s presence is where flourishing becomes visible.
