This verse in the King James

King James wording
By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

God’s favor is recognized when the enemy is present but cannot raise the victory shout over you.

You recognize that God delights in you because your enemy does not triumph over you. The enemy is real in the verse; what is denied is the enemy’s victory. God’s favor appears in the outcome without pretending the opposition is absent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

An enemy’s presence does not prove that you are unfavored; the verse names an enemy and treats its failure to triumph as evidence of God’s favor.

חָפַצְתָּ

ḥāphaṣtā

GROWS FROM

חפץ

To desire, delight in, or take pleasure in.

“you delight in me” in this verse is ḥāphaṣtā. The Hebrew behind “favourest” carries the sense of delight directed toward the speaker. The enemy’s failure to triumph becomes evidence of that relationship, not evidence that the danger was imaginary.

ALSO GROWS

ḥēpheṣ: Delight, pleasure, desire.

חֵפֶץ

This noun shows that the root gathers desire and delight, giving “favor” a relational depth.

ḥāp̄ēṣ: To desire or take pleasure in.

חָפֵץ

This verbal form shares the seed of the verse’s “thou favourest,” presenting favor as active delight toward the speaker.

יָרִיעַ

yārîaʿ

GROWS FROM

רוע

To shout aloud or raise a cry.

“shout over me” in this verse is yārîaʿ. The Hebrew verb can carry the image of a shout, so “triumph” has a sound beneath it: the enemy does not raise a victory cry over you. The enemy remains present, but does not get that cry of victory.

ALSO GROWS

rûaʿ: To shout aloud or raise a cry.

רוּעַ

This verb names the root action behind the verse’s image of an enemy crying out in triumph.

teruʿah: A loud shout, alarm blast, or signal cry.

תְּרוּעָה

This related noun shows the root can name the cry itself, bringing out the vocal image hidden within “triumph.”

Favor is recognized where opposition cannot establish the final outcome.

The LORD is at my side; I do not fear. What can humankind do to me?
Psalm 118:6 · SDVThe LORD’s presence is expressed as opposition losing its power to determine the outcome.
No weapon shaped against you will push through, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you will condemn. This is the portion of the servants of the LORD, and their alignment is from me, declares the LORD.
Isaiah 54:17 · SDVWeapons and accusations rise, but they do not prevail over the one held by the LORD.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 · SDVGod’s being for you changes what opposition can finally accomplish.
He brings me out into a broad place; he pulls me loose, because he delights in me.
Psalm 18:19 · SDV

“He delighted in me” shares the ⁨חפץ⁩ root behind “thou favourest me.” Here, that delight accompanies being brought into a large place, as constriction gives way to spaciousness.
