King James wording
King James Version
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.THE KEY
What is concealed in the heart is already known to God, and still searched out by him.
THE MEANING
Your inner life is not opaque to God: what is concealed in your heart is known to him. His searching reaches beyond what can be seen to what remains hidden within you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that an unspoken motive is invisible simply because no one else can see it.
THE ROOT
תַּעֲלֻמוֹת
taʿălumōt
GROWS FROM
עלם
To hide or conceal; what is hidden.
“hidden places” in this verse is taʿălumōt. The Hebrew points to concealed things, not merely private facts. The verse holds concealment together with God’s knowing and searching: what is hidden from view is not hidden from him.
ALSO GROWS
ʿālam: To hide or conceal.
עָלַם
It names the condition of the heart’s secrets: they are concealed, yet known to God.
neʿlām: Hidden or concealed.
נֶעְלָם
This form makes the contrast plain: what is hidden remains within God’s knowledge.
taʿălumāh: A hidden thing or mystery.
תַּעֲלֻמָה
It echoes the verse’s image of inward things that cannot be seen on the surface.
יַחֲקָר
yaḥăqār
GROWS FROM
חקר
To investigate, probe, or search thoroughly.
“search this out” in this verse is yaḥăqār. This is more than a passing glance: the word carries the sense of probing or examining. Beside “secrets,” it presents God’s search as reaching into what is concealed.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāqar: To search, examine, or probe.
חָקַר
This verb is the verse’s active image of reaching into the heart.
ḥēqer: Inquiry or investigation.
חֵקֶר
The related noun shows the root’s connection to deliberate searching, not mere surface sight.
יֹדֵעַ
yōdēaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know or perceive; knowing by encounter, not by information alone.
“perceives” in this verse is yōdēaʿ. The verse does not picture God learning the heart’s secrets after they are revealed. Knowing and searching appear together: the concealed interior is already within his perception.
ALSO GROWS
yādaʿ: To know or perceive.
יָדַע
It names God’s present knowing of what the heart conceals.
daʿat: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
The related noun carries the same seed of knowing, connecting perception with what is known.
THE PATTERN
What is hidden within a person remains fully visible to God.
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart.I, the LORD, search the heart and test the kidneys, to give each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his deeds. And no creation is hidden before him, but all things are naked and bared at the throat to the eyes of him to whom our account belongs.THE THREAD
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, you probe me, and you perceive me.The same Hebrew roots appear together here: חקר (ḥāqar), to search, and ידע (yādaʿ), to know. Psalm 139:1 turns the truth of Psalm 44:21 into a direct address: God searches and knows the person from within.
