This verse in the King James

King James wording
God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

With no changes to unsettle them, they mistake stability for immunity and have no awe of God.

God hears and afflicts them, the One who abides from of old. No changes come upon them, and so they have no awe of God: their unbroken condition leaves them feeling beyond interruption or answer.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the assumption that an untroubled life proves there is no reckoning. Stability can conceal dependence rather than erase it.

חֲלִיפוֹת

chalifot

GROWS FROM

חלף

chalaf

To pass on or by; to change, exchange, or renew.

“do not shift” in this verse is chalifot. This word for changes grows from a root that can describe passing on or being changed. The verse links their lack of upheaval with their lack of awe: when nothing seems to alter their course, they mistake that settled condition for immunity.

ALSO GROWS

tachalifem: You change them.

תַּחֲלִיפֵם

In Psalm 102:26, the same root describes God changing the heavens like a garment, showing that even what seems enduring can be altered.

yachalofu: They shall be changed.

יַחֲלֹפוּ

Also in Psalm 102:26, this form makes change something that happens to created things, opening a contrast with the false security of having no changes.

When security feels uninterrupted, people can mistake a temporary condition for immunity and forget their dependence on God.

And in my ease I said, I will never totter for the ages.
Psalm 30:6 · SDVProsperity feels permanent, making stability seem like protection from disruption.
Then your heart is raised high, and you let the LORD your God slip from you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
Deuteronomy 8:14 · SDVAn increase in security can turn the heart away from remembering its dependence on God.
But God said to him, Mindless one, this night your living soul will be demanded back from you. Then whose will those things be that you have made ready?
Luke 12:20 · SDVThe rich man’s sense of security is interrupted, exposing how little control his abundance gives him.
They perish, but you stand. All of them wear thin like a garment; as a robe you exchange them, and they are exchanged.
Psalm 102:26 · SDV

The same root ⁨חלף⁩ (chalaf), meaning to pass or change, appears in “change them” and “they shall be changed.” Beside Psalm 55:19, it reveals the fragility hidden beneath a life that seems untouched by change.
