This verse in the King James

King James wording
Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

Here, the shadow is not where joy disappears; it is the shelter in which joy finds its voice.

The help you have received is still holding you now. Within God’s sheltering wings, you rejoice while still beneath the shadow; joy does not have to wait for every obscurity to lift.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that joy is possible only once the shadow has passed: here, rejoicing rises inside the cover.

צֵל

tsel

GROWS FROM

צלל

To shade or grow dark.

⁨צֵל⁩ (tsel, shadow or shade) can name both a dark shape and the cool cover cast by something above. Under the wings, shade is not absence but shelter.

ALSO GROWS

tsel: Shadow or shade.

צֵל

The same word can evoke darkness and the coolness of cover, holding both senses in the verse’s image.

tsalal: To grow dark or become shaded.

צָלַל

The shadow is a real condition, but beneath the wings it is also a place of shelter.

כָּנָף

kanaph

GROWS FROM

כנף

Wing; also an edge or extremity.

“wings” in this verse is kanaph. ⁨כָּנָף⁩ (kanaph, wing) also names an edge or extremity: the body’s extended edge becomes a covering. Help takes a tangible shape as shelter held over the speaker.

ALSO GROWS

kanaph: Wing.

כָּנָף

The wing becomes the shelter beneath which the speaker rejoices.

kanaph: Edge or extremity.

כָּנָף

The wing is the far-reaching edge of the body, extended over another as cover.

רָנַן

ranan

GROWS FROM

רנן

To ring out, cry aloud, or sing joyfully.

⁨רָנַן⁩ (ranan, to ring out or sing aloud) carries the sound of voiced joy, not only inward gladness. ⁨רִנָּה⁩ (rinnah, a ringing cry or joyful song) shows that the shelter becomes the place from which that sound rises.

ALSO GROWS

ranan: To shout or sing for joy.

רָנַן

The speaker’s response to received help is audible joy.

rinnah: A ringing cry or joyful song.

רִנָּה

The sound of joy rises from within the shadow of the wings.

God’s covering becomes a place where trust and joy can live, even while the shadow remains.

He covers you with his feathers, and beneath his wings you take shelter; his steadiness is your shield and your encircling buckler.
Psalm 91:4 · SDVThe wings are a covering beneath which trust rests.
May the LORD repay your deed, and may your wages be whole from beside the LORD, God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take shelter.
Ruth 2:12 · SDVTrust is pictured as taking shelter beneath the wings of the LORD.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
Matthew 23:37 · SDVThe winged shelter is also a gathering place, offered even when it is refused.
Guard me as the little man, daughter of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 17:8 · SDV

Psalm 17:8 uses the same images of shadow and wings, and makes the sheltering action explicit: “hide me.” The shared wording opens Psalm 63:7’s shadow as the place where the speaker is kept close, and from within it, rejoices.
