King James wording
King James Version
Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.THE KEY
The kings flee, while the woman who stays at home becomes the one who apportions the victory.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two movements together: kings flee while the woman at home divides what remains. The authority to decide who receives the spoils rests with the one the fleeing rulers leave behind.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that only armed rulers control the outcome dissolves here: the kings flee, and the woman at home distributes the gains.
THE ROOT
תְּחַלֵּק
təḥallēq
GROWS FROM
חלק
ḥ-l-q
To divide, apportion, or distribute among shares.
“divides” in this verse is təḥallēq. תְּחַלֵּק (təḥallēq) is feminine singular: the woman of the house is the grammatical agent who apportions the spoil. Its branches חֵלֶק (ḥēleq, “portion, share”) and מַחְלָקָה (maḥălāqāh, “division, assigned section”) show that the turn is not only a change in who holds the goods, but in who assigns each share.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēleq: Portion; share.
חֵלֶק
This branch names what each person receives when a whole is apportioned; the woman determines those shares.
maḥălāqāh: Division; assigned section.
מַחְלָקָה
The root can describe an organized division, linking the act of dividing spoil with the authority to arrange its distribution.
THE PATTERN
When a ruling power loses its hold, the power to distribute what it held passes beyond that power.
And the LORD gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, so that they lent them what they asked. And they stripped the Egyptians. For who will hear and respond to you in this matter? But as is the portion of the one who goes down into the battle, so is the portion of the one who sits by the vessels of war; together they shall divide alike. But when a stronger one comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him his full armor, in which he trusted, and distributes his spoils.THE THREAD
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the plunder with the strong, because he poured out his living soul to death, and was counted with the rebels. He carried the falling short of many, and for the rebels he stepped in.Both verses use חלק (ḥ-l-q, “divide, apportion”) with שָׁלָל (šālāl, “spoil, plunder”). In each, the one who appears defeated or displaced becomes the one who distributes what the former power held.
