This verse in the King James

King James wording
Bless ye God in the congregations, even the Lord, from the fountain of Israel.

Blessing here is not an isolated feeling: it is the gathered people bending toward God from Israel’s shared fountain.

As you bless God among a gathered people, your praise rises from a source shared with Israel. The Hebrew verb ⁨בָּרְכוּ⁩ (barekhu, “bless ye”) also carries the image of bending the knee, giving blessing a bodily posture as well as a voice.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that blessing God is only private or inward: here, blessing takes voice and posture among a gathered people.

בָּרְכוּ

barekhu

GROWS FROM

ב־ר־ך

To kneel; to bless.

The plural command calls the gathered people to bless together. Its root also appears in the word for knee, giving blessing the shape of a posture as well as spoken praise.

ALSO GROWS

berekh: Knee.

בֶּרֶךְ

This branch shows the bodily posture carried by the root behind “bless.”

berakhah: Blessing.

בְּרָכָה

It keeps blessing in the same word family as the bent knee, joining the spoken act to its posture.

מַקְהֵלוֹת

maqhelot

GROWS FROM

ק־ה־ל

To assemble; to gather.

“in the assemblies” in this verse is maqhelot. The word rendered “congregations” grows from the root for gathering, so the praise takes place among people coming together. This root can name both an assembly and the act of assembling, making shared praise a place and a movement.

ALSO GROWS

qahal: An assembly or gathered people.

קָהָל

It names the gathered community within which this blessing is voiced.

haqhel: Gather together.

הַקְהֵל

This related form makes the root’s movement visible: the assembly is people brought together.

Praise becomes a shared act when a gathered community voices it together.

Let them lift him high in the assembly of the people, and praise him where the elders sit.
Psalm 107:32 · SDVPraise is voiced in the congregation and assembly, just as Psalm 68 places blessing among the gathered people.
Praise the LORD. Sing to the LORD a new song, and his praise in the assembly of the faithful ones.
Psalm 149:1 · SDVThe song belongs to the gathered community, making praise a shared voice.
Saying, I will bring back word of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to you.
Hebrews 2:12 · SDVThe speaker sings praise among his brethren, carrying the communal pattern into the New Testament.
I will recount your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.
Psalm 22:22 · SDV

The Hebrew words for “congregations” (⁨מַקְהֵלוֹת⁩, maqhelot, “assemblies”) and “congregation” (⁨קָהָל⁩, qahal, “assembly”) share the root ⁨קהל⁩ (qahal, “assemble”). Psalm 22:22 shows that gathering as the place where praise is voiced among kin, opening Psalm 68’s communal blessing into a shared voice.
