This verse in the King James

King James wording
O God, when thou wentest forth before thy people, when thou didst march through the wilderness; Selah:

The same verb that names a people’s going out also names God’s movement: deliverance is already stepping into the wilderness ahead of you.

The verse meets you in the wilderness with a presence already moving ahead of you. The barren stretch is not outside that movement: God goes forth before you and takes steps through it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that the wilderness means you have been abandoned.

בְּצֵאתְךָ

bĕṣēʾtĕkā

GROWS FROM

יצא

to go out, come forth

“wentest forth” in this verse is bĕṣēʾtĕkā. This is the same root used for a people going out and for being brought out. Here, that movement belongs to God, who goes out ahead of you; leading and deliverance are one movement.

ALSO GROWS

yatsa: to go out, depart

יָצָא

The root names the going out itself, the movement already underway in this verse.

hotsi: to bring out, lead out

הוֹצִיא

This causative form shows the same root as the action of bringing someone out; here, God’s own going forth leads the way.

בְּצַעְדְּךָ

bĕṣaʿdĕkā

GROWS FROM

צעד

to step, stride

The word translated “march” grows from the word for taking a step. God’s movement through the wilderness is expressed as steps across the ground, not just arrival at a distant destination.

ALSO GROWS

tsa'ad: to step, stride, march

צָעַד

This verb makes the passage through the wilderness a movement made step by step.

mitz'ad: a step, footstep

מִצְעָד

This related noun makes the root’s link between leading and actual footsteps visible.

The presence that leads moves ahead through terrain the people cannot yet see.

And the LORD is the one who goes before your face. He will be with you. He will not release you, nor leave you. Do not fear, and do not be shattered.
Deuteronomy 31:8 · SDVThe LORD’s presence is already ahead of you and remains with you as you enter the way.
For you shall not go out in a rush, nor go in flight, for the LORD goes before you, and the God of Israel will gather you in.
Isaiah 52:12 · SDVThe LORD goes before you and also guards behind you, surrounding your movement.
When he drives out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they perceive his voice.
John 10:4 · SDVThe shepherd leads by going ahead, so the path unfolds under the guidance of his voice.
And it came to be at the end of four hundred and thirty years, and on this very bone of the day it came to be, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
Exodus 12:41 · SDV

“Went out” here and “wentest forth” in Psalm 68:7 share the Hebrew root ⁨יצא⁩ (yatsa, to go out). Exodus names the people’s going out; the Psalm shows God going out before them, joining deliverance and divine leading in one movement.
