King James wording
King James Version
For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.THE KEY
The verse defines rescue as more than escape: God rebuilds a place where the rescued can dwell and inherit.
THE MEANING
The promise holds rescue, rebuilding, and belonging together: deliverance opens into a place you can inhabit. What is restored is not a temporary refuge but an inheritance, a future with room to remain.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that rescue only gets you out, and nothing stable or yours can exist on the other side.
THE ROOT
יוֹשִׁיעַ
yôshîaʿ
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-sh-ʿ
Deliver, rescue.
“delivers” in this verse is yôshîaʿ. The root names deliverance; the verse shows its shape by moving from rescue into building, dwelling, and inheritance. In the movement from constriction to spaciousness, rescue opens into room and belonging.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance, rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
Deliverance is the state opened by rescue, which the verse depicts as a restored place to inhabit.
moshia: Deliverer, one who rescues.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
The same root names both the act of rescue and the one who brings it about.
וּבָנָה
u-vānāh
GROWS FROM
בנה
b-n-h
Build, establish.
“build” in this verse is u-vānāh. The verse places building immediately after deliverance: the rescued are given a place that can hold life. Rescue takes concrete form as cities rebuilt for people to dwell in.
ALSO GROWS
boneh: Builder, one who builds.
בּוֹנֶה
The builder is named by the same seed as the act that makes the cities habitable.
binyan: Building, structure.
בִּנְיָן
The branch makes visible the result of building: a stable form in which dwelling can happen.
וִירֵשׁוּהָ
vîrēšûhā
GROWS FROM
ירש
y-r-sh
Inherit, take possession.
“take hold of it” in this verse is vîrēšûhā. The ending carries more than temporary occupancy: this root can mean inheriting as well as possessing. The rebuilt place becomes a lasting share for those who dwell there.
ALSO GROWS
yōrēsh: Heir, one who inherits.
יֹרֵשׁ
The people who possess the place are described through the language of inheritance.
morashah: Inheritance, inherited possession.
מוֹרָשָׁה
This branch clarifies the lasting character of what the verse promises: a possession passed on as inheritance.
THE PATTERN
Deliverance reaches its full shape when a restored people can dwell in what has been rebuilt and receive it as inheritance.
The aligned will inherit the land and pitch their tent in it for the ages. Those who come from you shall build the dry ruins of the ages. You shall raise up the foundations of generation to generation, and you shall be called the mender of the breach, the one who turns the paths back to dwell in.In whom you also are built together into a place where God settles, through breath.THE THREAD
Oh that the deliverance of Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD turns back the captivity of his people, Jacob leaps, and Israel is glad.Psalm 69 says God delivers Zion; Psalm 14 names Zion as the place from which Israel’s deliverance comes. The shared root ישע (y-sh-ʿ), meaning deliver or rescue, lets Zion appear as both the place restored and the source from which hope arrives.
